What a great picture of the moment this is! It is not quite up to Mike Tyson‘s standards, but it is a bite nonetheless. Martin Jol – who is fast overtaking Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho as the most blinkered Premiership manager – saw the incident as a "comical nibble." Under-pressure Alan Pardew has had his philosophical stance worn away by five straight league defeats and has been mulling over how a Defoe red card might have changed the game.

Sports minister Richard Caborn expects further action, but what out the people who really matter (that’s you Pies readers!)? Comical nibble or unnecessary violence worthy of at least a red card?

I thought the whole thing was hilarious, from Defoe crawling on his hands and knees, to the little nip on the arm and then Mascherano acting like he’d just lost a limb to a great white.
That’s why the Premiership is the greatest league in the world!

The only arguement Jol hasn’t used in Defoe’s defence is that he got the ball first.
I think Macherano should just count himself lucky it wasn’t Peter Crouch. He could have lost that arm.

Even as gooner it was absolutely nothing. Mascherano should be really pleased at how brave he looks in slow-mo.

I work with autistic children who have bitten me a hell of a lot harder than that, I can only imagine my workmates reaction if I rolled on the floor like that idiot.

    Seems pretty unanimous!
