Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon is desperate for David Beckham to extend his stay at the Bernabeu. Becks is currently discussing a new deal but he will be allowed to negotiate with other clubs from 1 January if terms are
not agreed – prompting rumours that he may move to the MLS in America.

Calderon, who became president in the summer, is clearly a big fan of Beckham: ‘He is a genius on and off the pitch and he is a wonderful person in every sense,’ Calderon said. ‘From a human point of view, he is one of the most charitable and lovely people that I have ever met.’

A glowing tribute from the man upstairs, but Beckham has started just two Primera Liga games so far this season as new coach Fabio Capello settles on his first XI. Both Juan Antonio Reyes and Raul have started ahead of the former England skipper, in right midfield.
