royston.jpgJose Mourinho wants to follow his successful Khalid Boulahrouz experiment by signing another colourfully named Dutch defender. The Special One’s target is Holland under 21 left-back Royston Drenthe. Despite sounding like the setting for The League of Gentlemen, £4 million-rated Royston has been one of the stars of the Dutch team in the European Under 21 Championships.
The Blues face competition from Aston Villa for the 20-year-old Feyonoord player. Royston could be tempted with Villa being more of a local club for local people! Feyonoord are eager to keep their youngster though. Interim director Peter Vogelzang said: “It is correct that Royston has received a lot of attention. But Feyenoord want to keep him for sporting reasons. He is the type of player the club needs. There are no financial reasons now why we must sell him.”

Left back? You could have fooled me! They’ve played him left wing or centre midfield for the whole tournament. Versatile? Oh yes!

Total football and all that, Lew!
