The Premier League has announced it is going to trial goal-line technology in the auspicious surroundings of Reading youth team matches. The Royals have been asked to test out Hawk-Eye technology with a view to introducing it to the Premier League in two years.
A football containing a microchip will be used to send an encrypted radio signal when it crosses the line (or sumfink like that, innit). Cameras positioned near the goal will relay the signal to a computer which will send a vibrating message to the referee’s watch.
Reading director of football Nick Hammond said: “The Premier League asked us to do it in our academy matches next season. Any technology which clarifies controversial incidents is welcome.” [Via Mirror]
