wbunited_narrowweb__200x260.jpgThe Premier League has announced it is going to trial goal-line technology in the auspicious surroundings of Reading youth team matches. The Royals have been asked to test out Hawk-Eye technology with a view to introducing it to the Premier League in two years.
A football containing a microchip will be used to send an encrypted radio signal when it crosses the line (or sumfink like that, innit). Cameras positioned near the goal will relay the signal to a computer which will send a vibrating message to the referee’s watch.
Reading director of football Nick Hammond said: “The Premier League asked us to do it in our academy matches next season. Any technology which clarifies controversial incidents is welcome.” [Via Mirror]

this seems to be a little bit more hi tec than it needs to be. surely just a small camera in each post would do. all this micro chip nonsense seems a tad much.

  2. Adam says:

I think they do it with the microchip so it can inform the referee directly, rather than going through an observer watching the cameras, which would interrupt the flow of the game.

  3. Finally! It’s about time those goal line calls lost the subjective quality we all hate so much!
