I’ve always wondered what would happen if you had a penalty shoot-out in a German cup game. Surely you’d be there all night? Not so it would seem. Bayern Munich survived a penalty shootout to defeat third division amateurs Wacker Burghausen in the first round of the German Cup. Bayern went a goal down in the game, only to scrape through on pens… after LOADS were missed. Wacker Burghausen coach Ingo Anderbruegge’s said “We were one shot away from a sensation”. 18-year-old Burghausen keeper Manuel Riemann, played out of his skin before scoring a penalty in the shoot-out himself. Watch the highlights here.

Manuel Riemann was really great, considering he’s just an eighteen years old goalkeeper from a third division team…I think he has future.

In defence of German penalty taking stereotypes I would like to add the following: All Germans in Bayern Munich’s squad got the job done and converted their penalties (with Philipp Lahm receiving the Antonín Panenka award for best and most beautiful penalty) and Oliver Kahn saved plenty. The ones who missed for Bayern came from places like Argentina. Hitzfeld should have known better after last years World Cup.
Ok, a couple of Burghausen players missed their efforts, but that’s why they only play in Germany’s third division.
