One to cut out and keep for all those misty-eyed Gooners out there, Thierry Henry’s trademark ‘Thierry Henry’ goal on his second Arsenal debut against Leeds last night…

“When he got in position, I thought ‘oh, that’s your angle’. It’s special finishing. That’s Henry finishing.”

Arsene Wenger reading a passage from Mills & Boon describing Saint Thierry’s effort. The manlove is palpable, and understandably so.

you have to be irish to be able to hate him.

  2. Mr. Sparkle says:

    Shades of old Thierry.

  3. Gooneriano says:

I’m Irish and i don’t hate him. He did what any other player would have done. I hate the referee and linesman who didn’t give a free kick for it that night. They were the only two people in the whole stadium that didn’t see it. If Robbie Keane did this he’d be hailed a hero. Long live king Henry…..

As a Spurs supporter I should dislike him and anything about him and Arsenal but,,,,

    THIERRY HENRY!

    A TRUE LEGEND!

It was like drunkenly looking at wedding photos after a particularly bitter divorce for me.

Great to see Titi back in red & white scoring his goal but it was only an FA cup tie against bloody Leeds. Shows how far Arsenal have fallen since Henry & co were in their pomp.

  6. Tosser says:

I’m tired of the “tired refrain” – ‘He did what any other player would done.’ Di Canio (no angel) didn’t do what any other player would have done nor did Arsene (as a manager) with his replay. Why do people still think that everyone games the system or cheats when the opportunity presents itself?

Ethical behavior is highly valued and I, for one, certainly hope that people can play a simple game without needing to cheat to either enjoy it or succeed in it. Here is hoping that future doctors, pilots, and every other child watching Thierry realized that it wasnt ‘OK’ in just certain cases to ignore the name of our favorite sport and play some rugby instead. It wasnt the sad referee who handled the ball and sent the useless French squad to South Africa it was a lapse in ethics of a great statesman and player.

    PS>Said play was offside.

  7. Ben says:

@Tosser You trying to tell everyone that people would be willing to turn against their own country and people to confess to a referee of a reactionary illegal handball they did in a game to knock their own country out?

    Come on get real.

  8. Ben says:

@Tosser The goal wasn’t offside if you actually watched the game instead of one gif..the fact that you are saying so tells me you really hate either Henry or Arsenal for some reason so much so that the hatred is making you throw logic out of the window.

  9. Fart Master Arse says:

Oh why have we got to ruin this moment by talking about Ireland?

  10. Eamo says:

@Ben he’s talking about France’s goal being offside. And not every player would cheat in that situation. It’s over now and it’s not turning against your country by not cheating it’s respecting the game, just don’t handle the ball in the 1st place

  11. Alex says:

    Fantastic Goal.
    Good Come Back!!!
    Awesome technique.

  12. Ben says:

Many players every weekend handle the ball on reaction in football, are they cheats too? Whether it be on defense or offense (ie. Vidic a few months ago) But the same people who call Henry a cheat probably should call half the players in the premier league a cheat as well by that logic?

@Eamo Henry does not have a history of dirty tactics at all, from what I’ve seen for many years since 2000 he is quite the opposite. So based on one occasion that was on reaction people say “cheat”. Well most players in that situation would have the same reaction from their body.. he didn’t have an evil plan to handle the ball.. it just happened on reaction/instinct/heat of the moment and he couldn’t confess. It’s the job of the referee and linesmen.

  13. Ben says:

Listen to the Irish poster above and even all the Irish people I know don’t call Henry a cheat. The ONLY people that seem to are the ones who hated Henry in the first place.

  14. Tosser says:

@Ben – I do not hate Henry, I thought that was clear from my “lapse in ethics of a great statesman and player.” There was no mention of his recent antics (kicking of Kevin Hartman or his slapping of Adam Moffat). I just take exception to the assumption that EVERYONE would have done the same thing in the same instance.

I was trying to defend those players (professional or otherwise) who would not have tapped the ball back into play with his\her hand. I think they exist (week-in and week-out at all levels). All of us have played more games of football without a ref than with and that is because we voluntarily adhere to a code of ethics so we can enjoy a kickabout. Rewarding or lionizing cheating is a slippery slope to chaos. Some people (kids), unfortunately or not, look at these paragons of sport and emulate them: I think it would be helpful if instances of unsporting play are not rewarded or dismissed with “every player would cheat in that situation” defense.

  15. Ben says:

Nice post nice read, but again the only reason I say it is usually overlooked is because most of the time it is reactionary in the moment and not planned for before hand.

  16. Del says:

I found out about his goal from twitter. I signed in and all the Arsenal players were going crazy over it! XD
