We’re not ones to admonish Premier League referees here on Pies as we are generally appreciative of the largely flawless job they do, but Vince Kompany’s red card against Arsenal this evening was several different kinds of wrong…

It’s not that we can’t see why Mike Dean may have thought otherwise, but that is a textbook ‘head on’ sliding challenge. An almost perfect example. The defensive art is almost dead in the water.

Wilshere over-ran the ball slightly and Kompany capitalised by getting his foot behind it – as the man himself Tweeted, ‘contact was inevitable’.

I disagree he left the ground and went in with two feet it was needless especially considering the difference in size between them. He got the ball and what? If you go in two footed off the ground your not in full control and someone gets hurt.

The ref saw it once, at full speed.

@Jules – you might want to watch the video again. It was a fine challenge, with one foot clearly behind the other (as the replays show). Kompany has every right to feel aggrieved.

One can only assume that Dean felt the need to even the score, seeing as the first sending off was equally questionable.

I,m a gooner and thought Koscielny had to go no question last man end of. Just feel Kompany could have completed the tackle easily enough without both feet leaving the ground. Although i understand im probably in the minority Wilshere was getting kicked all over the full 90 anyway.

I don’t understand why there’s any question over Koscielny’s red. Dzeko was through on goal and he decided to rugby tackle him, of course it’s a red.
@Jules What, so defenders have to look at the guy they’re about to tackle and go “shit he’s smaller than me, I better go easy on him,”? Just cos Kompany’s bigger has nothing to do with it, although I am starting to feel sorry for for Wilshere, every match I watch him play, he get’s kicked to pieces.

The thing is Kompany goes in with two feet a lot. If he isn’t punished he’ll hurt someone eventually.

Don’t know if you’ve ever played the game. But its quite difficult to go from standing to sliding without, at some point, being ‘in the air’. Maybe we should start punishing angry looks and loud noises next. I want football cleaned up!!!!

Why shouldn’t Kompany go in hard if it’s also fair? To suggest he shouldn’t/didn’t have to go in to the tackle as fierce as he did is punishing him for being physically stronger and braver in the tackle than Wilshere. Not to mention, it’s often the players that don’t go into the tackle whole heartedly that end up injured. It was the very definition of a perfect sliding tackle and completely absurd that it was even deemed a foul never mind a sending off. Tackling is over as we know it and new no contact rules need to be made if that is not rescinded by the FA.

Two feet were off the floor, one was behind the other, but two feet were off the floor. Is that not a red?

  12. Dave says:

You can’t slide tackle without leaving the floor!
