Poor old Lukas Podolski didn’t have the best of games in the Gunners’ 2-0 defeat at the hands of Man City on Sunday, but the loss doesn’t seem to have affected the German international too much.

On Monday evening, the day after the defeat, the attacker both updated his Facebook page and Tweeted to his followers that, hey “Shit Happens”. Yes Poldi, shit does indeed happen. Although, if you’re an Arsenal fan, it would happen a lot less if your highly paid German striker put the ball in the back of the net a bit more often, not to mention track back every now and then. While other Arsenal fans might also suggest that ‘shit’ is far more likely to happen to a team if the players themselves are indeed, ‘shit’.

Anyway, here’s the full message in both social mediums (I’ll get the Friends Reunited and MySpace ones later).

    well put poldi

  3. forithaca says:

A bit harsh on Poldi considering he plays very deep for someone on the forward line (often instigating counter-attacks from deep with through balls) and plays on the left wing as a left-footed player which means he’s set up to cross and not shoot. If he didn’t track back while playing on the right or in the center he’d probably find himself in more goal-scoring situations. But, yeah, their defense has been s*** this year.

  4. Luke says:

He has 10 goals and 7 assists in all games this season…and he never gets 90 minutes, they always take him out at the 60th minute. Seems like he’s been pretty consistent and good considering he’s not even playing in his best position, center forward.

  5. Bear says:

    Easy there…

As far as I can tell, Lukas has done a better job than many strikers in tracking back on defense, especially on set pieces, and especially compared to the past. True, he has left his marker at times, but I think this is coming off a bit harsh.

I’m no Arsenal fan, but having seen quite a few games of theirs, I think one of the most difficult issues is dealing with Walcott’s ego, who seems to find pretty much any excuse to take it on his own. His recent contract is testament to his reflexive opinion. Podolski has had six goals this season, tied for third most on the team with Giroud, in his first season in England and coming from a pretty shite Koln side (which he propped up). Wenger is playing lab technician with the side, where Podolski should be playing a wing-role where he can employ pace and service to Walcott and Giroud.

Not saying he’s perfect (far from it), and the message is not necessarily the best, but I would not label him ‘shit’ by any means.

Love 4 Poldi!!! Walcott is a little piece of shit! LEAVE IT YEAH!

I’m surprised at how good the translation was. Whenever I click on “translate” when I want to read what some foreign language update has to say, the translation is as worse as Google Translate’s one.

  9. Deutsch English says:

Geeze, seems that the xenophobic dribble that one would usually expect to read in The Sun is slowly making its way to WAATP. Shame on you for this unnecessarily critical assessment.

  10. Alan Duffy says:

@Deutsch – you may think I was a little harsh on Poldi, but where exactly am I being xenophobic???

  11. Stan Marsh says:

@Deutsch – You do know what xenophobic means, right?

  12. usrick says:

Why was the “shit happens” portion of the German message in English? Is there no German idiom for “shit happens” or something similar? Surely shit must happen in Deutschland just as it happens everywhere else.

Perhaps Deutsch English is more fluent in Deutsch than in English – someone should tell him auf Deutsch what ‘xenophobic’ means.

  13. Deutsch English says:

@Alan – ok, I take my “The Sun” comment back, but this article would have been equally intelligible had it just read “highly paid striker” and not “highly paid German striker”.

It’s quite normal in football reports to refer to a players nationality due to the multinational makeup of many of the top teams, and also generally to provide a bit of variety and extra information..WHATP also referred to Van Persie as “The Dutchman” in the man u match report…i think someone’s being a bit over sensitive..
