Arsenal 2-0 Marseille – Champions League – 26th November 2013

Britain Soccer Champions League

It was hardly a vintage Arsenal performance at the Emirates on Tuesday night, but courtesy of Jack Wilshere’s brace the Gunners are all but through to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

The England midfielder opened the scoring in the first minute, superbly curling the ball past Steve Mandanda in the Marseille goal and after that, the game turned into almost a training exercise with the home side dominating possession.

Mesut Ozil has experienced a comparative dip in form in recent weeks and fluffed a spot-kick after Aaron Ramsey had been fouled right on the edge of the box. However, after the break the German nicely set up Wilshere to make it 2-0.

The visitors were poor throughout, although the second-half introduction of Mathieu Valbuena and Florian Thauvin added a bit of much needed creativity to the side. However, ultimately it was the Gunners who strolled to victory. If they can dodge defeat by three or more goals in Naples, which they should, then Arsene Wenger’s men will be, as usual, back int he last 16.
