Arsenal weathered a late Crystal Palace comeback to secure a vital three points at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

The Gunners were 1-0 up within the first eight minutes, with Santi Cazorla converting from the penalty spot after Danny Welbeck had been felled in the box by Pape Souare. The visitors doubled their advantage just before the break when Olivier Giroud fired home after Eagles’ keeper Julain Speroni parried a Welbeck effort.

After the break, Arsenal almost went 3-0 up when Mesut Ozil released Alexis Sanchez, only for the Chilean to put the ball wide. After that it was the hosts who carried the greater goal threat but it took until the 94th minute for the south Londoners to get a goal back. Sub Glenn Murray was the scorer for the Eagles after a corner and the former Brighton man almost bagged a dramatic equaliser, only for his effort to come back off the woodwork.

The Gunners leapfrog Manchester United into third, at least until Sunday’s games, while Palace are 13th, five points clear of the drop-zone.
