It’s now almost six years since Aaron Ramsey broke his leg away to Stoke after a horror challenge from Ryan Shawcross. However, the repercussions of the incident continued to echo around the Britannia Stadium on Sunday, with the home fans once again targeting the Welsh midfielder with some ridiculous abuse.
The ever-present bee in Stoke fans’ bonnets is the apparent fact that after snapping Ramsey’s leg in two places, a distraught Shawcross tried to contact the Arsenal man to apologise. However, Ramsey, who spent eight months out of action after the potentially career-ending challenge, never replied to the Stoke man.
As well as constantly booing the former Cardiff City star, the Potters’ fans sang “Aaron Ramsey, he walks with a limp” throughout the game, which is just lovely. Now correct me if I’m wrong here, but surely Ramsey had every right not to accept the apology. After all, he does remain the victim?
Anyway, the Gunners’ star ignored the abuse and at one point even seemed to wave in the direction of the chanters. He also made a fine clearance off the Arsenal goal-line. Surely it’s about time the Stoke fans in question had a word with themselves?
As for the game itself, the two ‘keepers were the men of an enthralling match, with a draw a fair result. That stalemate sees the Gunners return to the top of the Premier League table, ahead of Leicester on goal difference. As for Mark Hughes’ Stoke side, they stay seventh.
