Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has, in so many words, admitted that he has been left in a bewildered state of baffling perplexity by Holland coach Bert van Marwijk‘s decision to call up Robin Van Persie for their friendly with Turkey on November 17th, despite the striker having not yet returned to full training after injuring his ankle back in September.

Speaking after his side’s 2-1 Champions League defeat at the hands of Shakhtar Donetsk last night, Wenger masked his ire, saying:

“He’s not played with us or practised with the group, so I’m quite surprised he’s included.”

‘Quite surprised’ presumably being somewhat of an understatement.

Van Marjwick has also seen fit to include a host of other players who have recently been sidelined, including Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt – who has only just recovered from the ‘serious ankle ligament injury’ he sustained whilst on international duty with the Oranje in mid-October.

Christ on a bike! Why are the Dutch suddenly so desperate for forwards?

    Fight!

  2. Jesus says:

Because they are quite shite in that department. Van Persie doesn’t fit in the Dutch system as was evident at the WC, Kuijt can’t play up fron well enough, Babel is beyond crap right now with the same cut inside and shoot trick not fooling anyone and Elia is nothing but a pace machine.

quite shite? they have van der vaart, huntelaar, sneijder… their attacking options are unending. do they really need VP? no. are the dutch living up to their stereotype of being insanely unreasonable? without doubt.

  4. Rainia M says:

and let me add that it’s just a friendly! they dont even need VP that bad =/ AND then again he won’t play 100% his abilities when he’s barely healthy again..why the hell did they call him up?!

  5. Andrew Thompson says:

i think RVP was just not in form at the world cup, if he didnt fit in with there system, it would of been talked about before the World Cup

  6. dennis says:

Van Marwijk is not stupid, if they’re still injured he won’t take them with him. Especially because the Dutch FA is still in discussions with Bayern about the injuries of Robben and Van Bommel.

These friendly games in the middle of the season are shite anyway, and totally unnecessary.

Erm, Jesus, you might want to take a look at the scorer’s table for the qualifiers… Huntelaar’s streets ahead of everybody. Which begs the question, why do we need RVP? He was ballast at the world cup and on top of that he’s a moody sod so can be a cancer in the dressing room. I’d drop him faster than Nigel de Jong, especially seeing as he’s injured…
