West Bromwich Albion 1-0 Aston Villa – Premier League – 13th December 2014

Ex-Villa midfielder Craig Gardner fired the Baggies to their first win in six games in this Midlands derby at the Hawthorns on Saturday.

The game hinged on the sending-off of Kieran Richardson after just 22 minutes, with the midfielder given his marching orders for a late challenge on Stephane Sessegnon. From that moment on, the hosts dominated for large periods of the game, although they had to wait until the 72nd minute for the breakthrough, with Gardner firing home after a scramble in the box. The 10-man Villans pushed for an equaliser but, despite seeing Christian Benteke going close late on, they couldn’t get back on level terms.

Alan Irvine’s charges go 14th, three points clear of the drop-zone while Paul Lambert’s Villans are 12th.
