It’s frankly astonishing that he’s lasted this long but tonight, after three years of abject nothingness, Aston Villa have finally parted company with manager Paul Lambert.

That sound you can here is several thousand Villa fans whooping in frenzied joy as they run in naked, swivel-eyed unison through the streets of Birmingham.

Announcing the news via a brief, fairly perfunctory statement on their website (you feel they may have had it typed up and sitting in their drafts for a while now), the Villa heirarchy decided to pull the trigger after Tuesday evening’s 2-0 defeat against Hull City – a result which saw them slide into the relegation zone.

Here’s the damning case for the prosecution: Villa’s frankly abysmal record under Lambert, examined against all the other teams that have been present in the league for all three seasons…

Bottom in everything bar win percentage. Truly dreadful on all fronts.

Seriously, how have they not been relegated by now?

Will he go back up north of the border?

I can’t see any PL team picking him with the stats shown.

Would he accept a Championship job?

    He may have to.

Such a boring, boring man. His interviews send me to sleep, I can only imagine what his “inspiring” team talks are like. Granted the owner has limited all spending to mostly cheap 2nd-tier type players, but it’s a miracle they haven’t been relegated already – this season and in previous ones. The championship is the right place for this mickey mouse club.

  3. Giancarlo says:

@bob: agreed, but they have a decent squad. There are some skillful players in that team albeit Benteke hasn’t found his form yet, but Lambert is just not a great coach and doesn’t know how to utilize them well. And like you said, I can imagine his motivation speeches are boring!

  4. ORD says:

See NUFC, SAFC and WBAFC all on the edge of being the next worse team. Makes for horrid reading being a Newcastle fan, not suprising though.

  5. What4 says:

Don’t insult the Championship. He’ll be lucky to get a League One team.

  6. Dazza Lambert says:

I don’t now… maybe the answer to “how have they not been relegated by now?” is Paul Lambert. Or could it be the strength of Gabby Agbonlahor’s pedo mustache kept them afloat?

  7. Ross says:

Those stats don’t do much for my team either!

  8. Greg says:

Looking at those stats my question is how have Chelsea not won a league title in that time?
