Last night’s Carling Cup tie between second city rivals Birmingham and Aston Villa was always going to be a tasty affair – hence the considerable hoik in police presence – and, during the game, the two sets of supporters provided a magnificent bristling alchemy of noise that married perfectly with the exciting, fractious football on display.

However, the tension boiled over at the final whistle when, having seen their side run out as 2-1 winners. thousands of Birmingham fans stormed across the length of the pitch at St. Andrews to taunt the Villa fans who were sat in the Gil Merrick Stand at the opposite end of the stadium.

A red flare was then thrown from the pitch into the terraces, and incensed Villa supporters responded by returning the flare and hailing their adversaries with torn-out seats as well as various other missiles.

The FA have since moved to condemn the ugly scenes that ensued post-game, with a spokesman confirming that a probe into the violence will be carried out accordingly:

“We wholly condemn the actions of any individuals who have been involved in the scenes of disorder at St Andrew’s.

“The FA abhors acts of violent behaviour and we urge the clubs and authorities to identify any individuals involved in disorder, and impose the stiffest available sanctions, including banning orders.

“The FA will fully investigate the matter in conjunction with the appropriate authorities as the whole of English football has worked hard to eradicate scenes of disorder from our game.”

Both clubs have also agreed to help weed out the moronic minority that still insist on using football as a means to vent whatever tiny-minded frustrations their dumb little synapses throw at them.
