While Real Madrid’s press office are busy scotching rumours of bids for Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, Barcelona’s legal department have been mobilised to deny reports that one of their former presidents purchased actual human body parts by illegal means.

Specifically, the Catalan giants have issued a statement to deny that Sandro Rosell used unlawful means to purchase a liver for Eric Abidal, who underwent a life-saving transplant back in April of 2012.

Claims have been made in the Spanish press today that Rosell, who is currently in police custody while waiting to stand trial on charges of money laundering, made several dodgy phone calls at that time in which Abidal was called a “son of a bitch” before talk of a liver being purchased came up in conversation.

Barca themselves have swiftly denied the allegations, as have Abidal himself and the hospital who carried out the operation.

In light of stories published today in relation to the liver transplant received by the club’s former player Eric Abidal, FC Barcelona roundly deny any irregularity in the matter, as have Abidal and the Hospital Clinic de Barcelona facility.

The stories omit an important fact, as this case was closed by a Barcelona court on May 18th.

This omission has caused damage to the reputation of Eric Abidal, all of the organisations involved in the transplant procedures, FC Barcelona and former club president Sandro Rosell.

The club are saddened by the lack of rigour in the spreading of such information about such a sensitive issue, and reaffirm our commitment to Eric Abidal and his foundation to help improve the lives of children and young people affected by similar medical treatments.

Imagine having to actually deny tapping-up a visceral organ.

What a sport.
