Barcelona jinkster Lionel Messi has been fined €2,500 (about £2,150) for wishing dear old Mami Messi a happy birthday after scoring against Racing Santander last weekend.

The referee did not see fit to caution Messi for the celebration at the time but did, however, mention the incident in his match report – therefore meaning that the Argentinian forward had to be put up in front of the Spanish football federation’s disciplinary committee, who duly punished him under article 91.1 (which presumably relates to heinous, grievous and generally abhorrent goal celebrations) which carries a mandatory fine of anywhere between €2000 and €3000.

Good to see a real deliquent get collared for once.
