This weekend is FA Cup fourth-round weekend, and the headline affair is the first meeting between Liverpool and Manchester United since that whole sordid Suarez/Evra ordeal swelled up, became painfully inflamed, burst through the abdominal wall of public consciousness and then scabbed over like a big racist hernia.

I can’t say I’m particularly looking forward to it myself, there’s an uneasy feeling in my waters – not because of the prospect of the game itself, but because of the atmosphere I can’t help but anticipate at Anfield after a month or two of heightened antagonism, baiting and hostility between two sets of fans that don’t need much of an excuse to go for each other’s jugulars.

Players from both sides have appealed for an air of ‘rivalry’ rather than ‘hatred’ from their respective supporters, and Sir Alex has kindly requested that all ribbing be saucy but above the belt at all times. Here’s hoping their pleas for decorum don’t fall on deaf ears. Which they almost undoubtedly will. Some chump will have spent the intervening weeks crafting and circulating a pithy chant or two, you can bet your bottom €uro.

Anyway, let’s not get bogged down in negativity. In the interests of hindsight and bragging rights, can we have your scores on the doors for the game itself please?

Pies says: I’m plumping for a tit-for-tat game that will see United go in 1-0 up at half-time and eventually run out as 3-2 winners by full-time – with at least one red card chucked in for good measure…

Full-time in Chelsea’s last-minute loss in Leverkusen brought Pies’ Heineken Star Player mini league challenge to a close, with one lucky so-and-so (by his own admission!) winning a pair of tickets to Manchester City’s must-win final Champions League group game against Bayern Munich at the Etihad on December 7th.

With every prediction made and every trivia question guessed at willy-nilly, the competition became evermore fierce at the business end of the table as the night progressed, but a winner emerged at the death – and I’m not talking about Leverkusen.

Step forward and take a bow Stellious, who bested everybody with an ticket-snaffling overall total of 7779 points – almost 800 points clear of second place thanks to a last minute flutter on Manuel Friedrich heading home with the last touch of the game.

Once again, mucho congratulations to Stellious, well played squire. The Man City tickets are in the post courtesy of Pies. We’d also like to extend a hearty ‘thank you’ to everyone who signed up and played – especially Dockx_1 from Belgium, who put the effort in last night despite missing the first match entirely!

Heineken Star Player is a real-time game that allows players to predict the outcome of various incidents during live Champions League games and by playing along with Pies next week, you could stand to win a really rather fantabulous prize.

How to play…

Free-kicks or corners result in a quick decision having to be made, with each outcome – goal, miss, save, clear – offering a different points haul depending on the probability of each outcome.

There are also trivia questions that will offer points during lulls in play, achievement badges to collect and various ‘power-ups’ to maximise your score – all of which you will be explained on the Star Player site once you sign up.

Anyway. Heineken have given us the chance to allow 25 Pies readers (first come, first served) into a mini-league to square-off on Star Player during Man Utd vs Benfica on Tues 22nd Nov and Bayer Leverkusen vs Chelsea on Weds 23rd Nov.

Just to make it clear, the league will run during both games over the two consecutive nights.

The player with the most points, sitting proud at the top of the table come the end of the game on Wednesday night will then win a pair of tickets to Man City vs Bayern Munich at the Etihad on 7th December courtesy of our pals at Heineken.

“Christ! Is that you again Nando? I told you, not in public!”

Chelsea travel to Spain to take on Valencia in the Champions League tonight, a game that will see, among other things, Juan Mata return to Los Che in Chelsea blue for the first time after spending the last four seasons making his name at Los Che and a healthy dose of  ‘God knows what?’ from a certain consistently wildly inconsistent freckle-speckled striker by the name of Fernando.

I’m not usually a man to dispense football betting tips readily but, given his recent track record, I reckon you can probably hang your hat on something cracking off.

Rather perversely, the untimely red card that Torres received against Swansea on Saturday previous is likely to earn him a start in the rickety old Mestalla, given that his brief 38-minute run-around at Stamford Bridge renders him one of the fresher players in Chelsea’s first-string.

That’s the way to do it kiddywinks!

“GET…OUUUUTTTT!!!!”

Any road up, seeing as though he’s contributed two smart goals, one abysmal open-goal howler and a straight-red dismissal in his last two back-to-back games/128 minutes of football, we thought we’d have a go at trying to second-guess just what tonight’s game may hold in store for young Nando – in tried and tested list format…

1. Let’s start with the humdrum basics shall we? One goal, one instant red card for clotheslining Unai Emery to the turf on the touchline in crazed celebration.

2. Scores early but, in the stifling heat of a Spanish evening, Torres’ plasticine knee-tendons melt down to the consistency of the centre of a Creme Egg and he has to be removed from the pitch in a groundskeeper’s wheelbarrow.

3. Torres nets a hat-trick, but is also sent off four times simultaneously for raising his hands while screaming foul and abusive language while bringing down a clean-through opponent with a studs-up taekwondo kick to the kidneys.

4. A furious bitch-slap fight breaks out between Torres and Valencia’s Roberto Soldado, with both strikers claiming to have filed the most pathetic fluffing of an open goal so far this season.

5. Torres scuffs the ball badly while taking a penalty but unwittingly unearths a swirling portal to the underworld that has been buried just below the Mestalla penalty spot for eons, into which the entire city of Valencia is sucked – game is written off as a draw.

As I say, I’m not a betting man, but I’m sorely tempted to have some kind of unholy accumulator on all five.

Elsewhere, in other proper preview-y pre-match news – while it’s not set in stone, Frank Lampard is expected to start on the bench again for Chelsea with Ramires available again after serving a suspension against Bayer Leverkusen a fortnight back.

Daniel Sturridge is unlikely to be risked though his dicky knee has cleared up, while Alex, Paulo Ferreira and Josh McEachran are also unavailable as all three didn’t travel out to Spain with the rest of the squad.

Arsenal v Bolton, 15:00

Crisis what crisis? In spite of all the talk of sacking the manager Arsenal have only lost one of their last four games (they beat Swansea at home, enjoyed a Carling Cup win over Shrewsbury and drew away at Dortmund in the Champions League). However after some catastrophic defending against Blackburn they are now hovering just above the relegation zone. Mind you things haven’t been going too well for Bolton either this season. Last week they lost 2-1 at home to Norwich and the week before they got tonked 5-0 at home by Manchester United. Their away form is better with a 4-0 win at Loftus Road against QPR and they did put in a reasonably good display in a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool. Last season Arsenal spanked the Wanderers 4-1. Anything less than a home win this week would be disastrous for the Gunners.

Chelsea v Swansea, 15:00

It had all been going so well for Chelsea this season with three wins out of four (their only wobble a draw away at Stoke on the season’s opening day) and then along came the trip to Old Trafford. Still the defeat was no disgrace and the Blues created plenty of chances, even if they didn’t take them. Swansea’s last trip to London was a couple of weeks back at the Emirates where they put in a brave display and almost sneaked a point. Things got even better for the Swans last week with a 3-0 home win over a disappointing West Brom. Swansea’s other away game this season saw them hammered 4-0 by an Aguero-inspired Man City and I don’t think their first away victory of the season will come at Stamford Bridge.

Stoke v Man Utd, 17:30

Stoke’s form this season has been impressive. They beat Liverpool, shared the spoils with Chelsea and, courtesy of a penalty shoot-out, beat Tottenham in the Carling Cup at home. On their travels they have beaten West Brom, drawn with Norwich and played well twice in the Europa League. However that 4-0 by drubbing by Sunderland last week was a painful one, and now is not really the time to take on a United team that scores just for fun and has the Prem’s last remaining 100% record. Last season the visitors won an edgy contest 2-1. Stoke will do well to keep the score to that level this time round.

Forgive me for feeling a bit smug after predicting a 1-0 win for Stoke against Liverpool last week. So might Tony Pulis’ team be surprise Champions league contenders? Weirder things have happened.

Liverpool’s admittedly slightly freaky loss underlines that it is still pretty much open season for that fourth Champions league slot. Arsenal and Spurs are only going to improve aren’t they?

Before getting too big headed though I did however predict that Bolton might cause Man United a few problems. Mmm.

Sunday 18th September 2011 KO 16:00 at Old Trafford

Manchester United are buoyant at present and Alex Ferguson seems to have worked the oracle again with a string of high class acquisitions. At first sight the best price 17/20 for them to continue their 100% start to the season looks a solid selection and is most definitely a price you won’t see the layers quoting too often again over the next 8 months.

However, rumours of Chelsea’s demise seem grossly exaggerated and an impressive effort against beleaguered Sunderland at the Stadium of Light suggest that AVB might finally getting his ageing team of stars back to their best. United were able to rest key players in their European sojourn midweek and will come into this fresh but Chelsea can definitely give them something to think about.

Spurs v Liverpool
Sunday 18th September 2011 KO 13:30 at White Hart Lane

Early to mid 2000, you’d put your house on Liverpool walking away with nothing less than a point from this fixture, however since 2008 it’s been a different story and therefore somewhat hard to distinguish a winner. Last season at Anfield with Liverpool in good form and Tottenham on the decline, Harry managed to bag a victory which guaranteed them a UEFA place. This highlights a quality which both teams find a difficulty possessing – consistency.

Tottenham kicked off the season slow and it wasn’t only due to the riots, which saw their opening game postponed. Facing both Manchester sides in their first two games was never going to do much in boosting team morale and with the aforementioned eager to outdo each other, Spurs suddenly found themselves on a goal difference of minus seven. They’ve managed to pick up the pieces and show their quality last weekend against Wolves, cruising to a comfortable three points, which saw them propel off the foot of the table.

Liverpool got off to a good start, but after a large summer shopping spree a home draw against Sunderland may not have been to the fans liking, though a win at the Emirates and at home to Bolton gave the Kop something to smile about. Once again however, consistency struck as they suffered their first league defeat at the hands of Stoke City, who may warrant the title of “Liverpool’s bogey team”, on analysis of their head-to-head stats. With all that said picking a winner still proves a difficulty, but I feel Redknapp has the knack of spotting Liverpool’s weaknesses and I sense a well-fought home win.

Borussia Dortmund v Arsenal

This looks like a tough start for the Gunners, especially on the back of their heavy defeat
at the hands of Manchester United in the Premier League. Current Bundesliga Champions
Borussia Dortmund are quietly fancied to do well in this season’s Champions League
following some excellent performances in their domestic league last season.

The group would appear to be between these two teams but Marseille may have something to
say about that and Olympiakos will not be an easy place for any of the teams to go.

Chelsea v Bayer Leverkusen

It is Roman Abramovich’s dream for Chelsea to win the Champions League but the dream is
yet to be fulfilled. They have come relatively close on a few occasions but are yet to capture
Europe’s biggest prize. On the evidence of what we have seen so far this season, it is likely
they will come up short again.

They could improve throughout the season under new manager André Villas-Boas but they
will need to do something about the shaky defence. Bayer Leverkusen are no mugs and will
present a tough challenge for the Blues, but I fancy Chelsea to win by the odd goal.

Benfica v Manchester United

Beaten finalists in the 2010/11 season, Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United side will
be desperate to go one better this time around. Although Barcelona look head and shoulder
above everyone else and are the worthy favourites to make it back to back titles, Manchester
Utd are improving all the time and last season’s Premier League Champions will once again
give any side in the competition a serious headache.

Benfica are the second favourites behind Manchester Utd to qualify from Group C and should
make it to the knockout stage, but they may have to wait a little longer before claiming their
first points of the campaign.

Best Bet – Away win at 21/20 with William Hill

Manchester City v Napoli

It will be very interesting to see how big spending Manchester City perform in their first
season in the Champions League. They were kept out the competition by Spurs the previous
year, but their sheer number of signings have taken them to the next level and they managed
to finish third in last season’s Premier League. Roberto Mancini’s men have begun the 2011-
12 campaign in very impressive fashion and there is no reason why they won’t challenge for
the Champions League at the first time of asking. Napoli find themselves in a very difficult
group with Man City and Bayern Munich likely to take the top two positions. I can’t really
see them taking any points away from the City of Manchester Stadium.

Impossible to say who will be left at Everton when this game comes around. Though given his previous form I think Monsieur Wenger’s bids for Jagielka, Arteta (and maybe Baines) will still be vaporware by Saturday afternoon. With an expected exit of stars, financial black clouds looming and a poor start to the season Everton need to get this right. I think even if Wenger has poached their top stars they should be too strong for relegation-friendly Blackburn.

Impossible to see this as anything but a home win for Chelsea. Be interesting to see if new boys Mata (aren’t you jealous Arsenal fans?) and Lukaku get a run out. As for Norwich their relatively good start to the season is about to go tits up.

Typical. Everyone predicts you are going to have a really strong season and you get a handy draw at Anfield, but then your local rivals steal a win from you at home. Steve Bruce ought to be very concerned about Sunderland’s lack of goals too. Still expect Sunderland’s midfield to be too powerful for the welsh boyos and Gyan to sneak a winner.

Suarez or Carroll? Carroll or Suarez? Cos apparently you can’t play them both. After a shaky home draw with Sunderland the Reds redeemed themselves with a solid display at the Emirates where they were just about worthy winners. If Dalglish can sort out his striker dilemma and get Gerard fit then just maybe Liverpool will be Champions League material this season. No matter who starts upfront they bought to be too strong for the Wanderers.

A surprisingly robust start to the season by what looks like quite a solid Newcastle team. If only they can hang on to Joey B for another week. Fulham have had a poor start probably not helped by the distraction of their European adventures and after this game they could find themselves in the bottom three

Tottenham v Man City, 13:30

Forget the other North London/Manchester game – this is the most intriguing fixture of the weekend. With all the fuss about a want way midfielder, the lack of new players (this is sounding really familiar) as well as being shamed by Fergie new young charges, Redknapp has a lot of work to do. Still Spurs are a different prospect at home and a second week at the foot of the table is simply not an option. City have the firepower to win this, but I am gambling on a quiet Nasri debut, and Aguero to still not have located his shooting boots that went AWOL at Bolton and I think this one is good for a score draw.

West Brom v Stoke, 15:00

More bad news for Woy this week as a resurgent Stoke come to town with their big brawny squad, crafty throw set-pieces and so far, so good away form. However scoring seems to be a big of a problem for Stoke, but I’d put money on Kenwyn Jones to continue his habit of coming up with late goals and propel Stoke a few places up the Prem table.

Man Utd v Arsenal, 16:00

The last time Arsenal had a whiff of a relegation battle was back in 1994 after giving George Graham the boot. But lose this game and one point from three games should see them in the bottom three. Still too early to say whether the Londoners will be touting some new high profile stars by Sunday but it seems unlikely and a very impressive United ought to be way too strong for them.

Sit back and watch the best of the 2011/2012 Premier League season live with Sky Sports HD.

Not that we’re sitting in our undercrackers, idly watching the clock or anything, but there is now only 26 days, 3 hours, 29 minutes and 29 seconds until the Premier League farts back into life and hits our screens again over the weekend of August 13th – so we reckon it’s high time to take a deep swill of chutzpah juice and make our famous(ly rubbish) and fearless predictions for 2011/12…

1. Chelsea to win the title – Let’s get the biggie out of the way first shall we? Sir Alex reckons we’re looking at a six-way rumble for the title next season, with United, Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool and…erm…Spurs (we think?) all vying for the silverware.

We’ll discount Tottenham here and now because, in Layman’s terms, they’re Tottenham – but the possibility of Liverpool sneaking into the mix has been heightened by a decent batch of summer acquisitions and the warm, rejuvenated halo of optimism emanating from King Kenny’s hind-quarters.

We see City struggling to keep their plates spinning without the safety net of Carlos Tevez’s steady goal stream and Arsenal look more fractious than ever – so, when the dust finally settles after Christmas, we envisage yet another two-horse race with Chelsea pipping United this time around.

Though, to be fair, that’s what we said last year.

2. Liverpool to nab Arsenal’s spot in the top four - Many are backing Luis Suarez to carry on where he left off last season and provide Liverpool with the kind of flair that they’ve missed of late, but we’ve got a sneaking suspicion that it will be the altogether more agricultural ‘Downing/Carroll’ axis that yields the most points on Merseyside next year.

3. Top four will be - Chelsea, Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool with Arsenal securing Champions League football despite finishing fifth by qualifying via some ancient bylaw written in the small print of the Domesday book.

4. Blackburn to sack Steve Kean by October - Don’t get us wrong, Kean is by no means offensive, but unfortunately he is also utterly charmless and certainly doesn’t seem to sit right as far as Venky’s airy-fairy ambitions for Blackburn are concerned.

Looks like he hasn’t been allowed to spend any of the chicken money this summer and we reckon he’ll be the first managerial casualty of 2011/12 – being rolled aside for a ‘bigger’ name (Avram Grant?) to step into the breach following a couple of crap performances/ iffy results during the first few weeks of the season.

To be precise, we’ve got our eyes on the decisive pounding being doled out by Arsenal at Ewood on September 17th.

5. Fernando Torres to score a (relative) shed-load of goals - Nando’s already notched one in pre-season, and we’re backing the intricate approach play of the newly-fit Yossi Benayoun to really help make the difference vis-a-vis Torres’ goal haul in 2011/12.

Never has so much faith been heaped on top of one so spindly, grey and frail.

6. Robin van Persie to finish top scorer - Prolific on a game-by-game basis whenever he took to the field last season, if the Dutchman can stay fit for…ah.

Yes, we know he’ll be crocked for at least three months at some point, but we really think that next year RVP is going to land the golden boot despite his balsa wood skeleton and ligaments o’ warm-chocolate.

7. Alex McLeish to suck the life out of Villa - With Young and Downing riding off into the sunset, things aren’t looking too promising for Villa as the new campaign begins to crown over the horizon – especially given that they relied fairly heavily on their front three for long stretches of last season.

We don’t mean to stereotype, but you can probably expect a nine-man defensive unit at Villa Park next term, with Darren Bent (who’ll up-sticks and vamoose in January) told to man the opposition’s half solo, á la Cameron Jerome and all the big men then cavaliering forward to clatter home corners and free-kicks. Birmingham Mk II.

The club’s dwindling reserve of fleet-footed creative players (Albrighton, Agbonlahor, Ireland?) are going to have to seriously up their respective games if Villa are to even come close to repeating their ninth-place finish come next May.

8. Everton to have a decent start to a Premier League season for once - Another off-season of absolutely zippo transfer activity again suggests otherwise, but here’s hoping – Lord knows they’re long overdue.

After getting a tricky opener against Spurs out of the way on August 13th, the Toffees play QPR, Blackburn, Villa, Wigan and Man City before wading into the first Merseyside derby of the season on October 1st – by which we hope they’ll have snagged enough points to at least not have incurred the annual (laughable) ‘Moyes Out!’ internet campaign.

9. Norwich, QPR and Wigan will go down - Of the three clubs that were promoted, we’re backing Swansea to stay up by the skins of the teeth – though a maiden Premier League outing on the opening ‘Monday Night Football’ (Aug 15th) of the campaign against Man City is sure to test the Swans’ top-flight mettle straight off the bat.

We’ve got Norwich finishing bottom, Wigan finally succumbing and disappearing in a cloud of wild inconsistency and QPR slipping down in 18th, as having poor old, put-upon Neil Warnock at the helm (assuming he’s still there) makes you automatic Premier League relegation fodder by law.

10. Carlos Tevez returns to the Premier League - Signs for Chelsea in January after going on strike at Corinthians, retires after ‘falling out of love with paychecks’ in June, rejoins ‘boyhood club’ West Ham in July, retires again in August…etc, etc.

There you go folks and folkettes, any fearless predictions of your own you’d care to share with the group?

Sky Sports will be covering all the big head-to-heads, including Manchester United’s heavyweight clashes with Arsenal (Aug 28th) and Chelsea (Sep 18th), as well as screening seven major derbies in HD including Everton v Liverpool (Oct 1st), Tottenham vs Arsenal (Oct 2nd) and the Manchester derby followed by QPR vs Chelsea (both on Oct 23rd).
