Cruzeiro keeper Fabio learns the hard way that football clubs normally have more than one ball

January 31st, 2008

We reckon Brazil’s championship is definitely the funniest league in the world. There is always something crazy going on in the Campeonato Paulista, and this example is no exception. Cruzeiro goalie is still grieving the fact that his side have just gone 3-0 down safe in the knowledge that he can see the ball in the back of his net. Unfortunately, the Atletico Mineiro players and even his own team-mates had resumed action with a different ball. Oops!

Mancini grabbed the only goal of the game.

New boy Balazs Dzsudzsak opened the scoring for PSV and Geert den Ouden confirmed the win in the 81st minute. The real activity was at the bottom of the table though. Four of the bottom six recorded wins at the weekend. Most notable was NEC Nijmegen’s 2-0 victory over Utrecht, which was their first win since November 9.

Classic Moment – Celtic’s Johnny Doyle knocks the ref out

January 30th, 2008

This hilarious video shows Celtic’s Johnny Doyle whipping in a cross against former club Ayr United, but finding the referee’s head with pinpoint accuracy. The ref is knocked out cold and is out for a bit of revenge when he comes round. Doyle becomes – as far as we know – the first player to be sent-off for knocking the referee out with a cross.

January 29th, 2008

Love him or hate him, there’s no doubt that United’s fleet-footed winger, Cristiano Ronaldo, is quicker than a greyhound on steroids. Here in another of Nike’s ‘we doubt that really happened’ viral ads he takes on the world’s fastest road car, the Bugatti Veyron, and somehow manages to pip it at the post.

robinho%20shoe.JPG
Real Madrid closed in on a second successive La Liga title as nearest rivals Barcelona dropped points. The Catalan giants drew 1-1 at Athletic Bilbao, which meant Real’s 3-2 win over Villarreal was enough to extend their lead at the top of the table to nine points. The champions twice took the lead through Robinho, but both times Villarreal fought back. Wesley Sneijder’s 76th minute goal settled the match though.

January 25th, 2008

lyon%20lens.JPG
Table-topping Lyon suffered a shock 3-0 defeat at Lens on Sunday, but it was all smiles again by Wednesday when they beat Lorient 2-0. Struggling Lens followed up Sunday’s win with victory over Valenciennes. Nancy picked up only a point from their two games following a 1-0 defeat at Nice and a 1-1 draw with Marseille. That allowed in-form Bordeaux to edge them out of second spot after victory against Le Mans. Bordeaux are now six points behind Lyon with a game in hand.

Mexican side Chivas field 71-year-old striker Chava Reyes

January 25th, 2008

Shouts of ‘my grandad could do better than you’ from the crowd might seem a little far-fetched in most instances, but not in Mexico. The accusations could be levelled quite fairly at Chivas’ 71-year-old striker Chava Reyes. The club’s all-time leading scorer was rolled out of retirement and drafted into the starting line-up of their match against Pumas.

Africa Cup of Nations – Tunisia 2-2 Senegal, Angola 1-1 South Africa

January 24th, 2008

A relatively quiet day in Ghana yesterday, at least compared with some of the exciting games earlier in the tournament. In Group D, one of the hardest groups to call, each of the four teams picked up a point after two intriguing, if not scintillating, draws. Tunisia 2-2 Senegal Senegal were denied the win their [...]

As advertising techniques go there are more effective ones (and ones less likely to cause a spate of road accidents for that matter), but nonetheless Uefa are promoting the forthcoming European Championships with… wait for it… a hot air balloon in the shape of the trophy. The official Euro 2008 hot air balloon completed its test flight earlier this week and will commence a tour of Austria and Switzerland on Monday.

Africa Cup of Nations round-up – Egypt 4-2 Cameroon, featuring Zidan’s hot-shoe juggle

January 23rd, 2008

Wow, what a cracking game that was, the best of the tournament so far. Egypt tore Cameroon apart in the first half, playing a dynamic brand of football that the Lions couldn’t live with. Samuel Eto’o did his best to inspire Cameroon, but they were no match for the north Africans. Egyptian striker Mohamed Zidan, [...]

Landon Donovan becomes USA’s leading all-time goal scorer. Go Landycakes!

January 22nd, 2008

landon_donovan12.JPGIt almost escaped my notice that Landon Donovan – team-mate of David Beckham, husband to a hot wife, hero to millions of not-quite-so-hot soccer moms – just overtook Eric Wynalda to become the USA’s top goal scorer… ever.
Landon notched a penalty in the 48th minute during the US’s 2-0 victory over Sweden (a ‘B’ Sweden, it should be said) this weekend, his 35th goal in 97 international appearances. in doing so, he surpassed Eric Wynalda, who will forever be stuck on 34 goals.
