The Premier League has revealed it will NOT say yes to the proposed idea for a play-off for fourth place (which comes with a Champions League place). The concept would have seen the teams finishing between fourth and seventh in the Prem playing off over two semi finals and one final.
At the Prem’s board meeting today, chairmen decided that the play-off was a non-starter. A slight surprise, as you would think it’s in the interest of all the mid-table teams to give themselves a shot at the Champions League pot.
I guess they said no because it would cost even more £££s to build a team capable of performing in Europe – and, with Pompey’s plight very much on the minds of chairmen, spending more cash is not an attractive option right now.
Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said there was “not enough support” for the idea.
“The main topic of discussion was the Champions League play-off for that fourth qualifying place,” he told the BBC in a radio interview.
“We gave a lot of discussion, a lot of detail, a lot of data. But there was not enough support to take the idea forward, so we won’t be discussing that proposal any further.”
A very wise decision, methinks.
