It was a bad night for Real Madrid on Wednesday, with Zinedine Zidane’s star-studded side deservedly losing 2-0 away at Wolfsburg in their Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash.
However, even more embarrassing than Madrid’s surprise defeat were the histrionics of full-back Marcelo, who produced an appalling dive after a nothing clash with Maximilian Arnold.
The ridiculous incident occurred after Brazilian defender Marcelo kicked out at Wolfsburg’s Arnold, an act which should’ve seen the Madrid man see red.
However, instead, he went down like the proverbial sack of potatoes after his head made (light) contact with Arnold’s stomach. Marcelo then proceeded to hold his face as though he’d been smacked in the gob. Truly pathetic…
Surely there should be some sort of retrospective punishment for incidents like these. Indeed, surely a panel should sit after each match day (for all major competitions) and single out the divers and cheats?
As for the game itself, a penalty from Ricardo Rodriguez followed by a goal from Arnold gave the hosts a 2-0 lead at the break. In the second period, a below-par Madrid simply couldn’t get themselves back into the game while Wolfsburg could have gone ever further ahead.
Still, Los Merengues will still probably turn on the style in the return leg at the Bernabeu and overturn this defeat.
Here’s the highlights…
