That faint cheer you heard this afternoon was the city of Leeds rejoicing en masse at the news Massimo Cellino has sold 50% of his stake in the club.

With talks beginning several months ago, Cellino struck a deal on Wednesday with Italian businessman Andrea Radrizzani that will see him relinquish control in instalments between now and the coming summer.

According to Sky Sports, Cellino has sold the first half of his stake today with Radrizzani retaining the option to take full control at the end of the season.

Radrizzani, who was born in Milan and grew up supporting Juventus, recently sold 65% of his media rights company to Chinese investors for $1 billion.

Our sleuthing leads us to conclude that that’s probably where the money is coming from.

This all coincides with an upturn in fortunes on the pitch for Leeds, who have clawed their way up to fifth place in the Championship under the stewardship of Garry Monk.

Consistency? At Leeds? Isn’t that one of the signs of an impending apocalypse?
