Atletico Madrid kept their faint hopes of squeezing through to the Champions League knockout stages alive with a 2-0 win over Roma at the Metropolitano on Wednesday night.
The home side took until the 69th minute to make the break through when Antoine Griezmann dispatched Angel Correa’s cut-back with a handsome overhead kick.
Griezmann has been attracting the heckles and jeckles of a certain section of the Atleti support of late, due to a perceived dip in the French forward’s effort expenditure amid rumours he’s already agreed to join Barcelona at the end of the season.
Regardless, Kevin Gameiro then tucked another one away from an acute angle in the 85th minute to shore up the victory, meaning that the Spanish side retain a slim mathematical chance of making it into the next round despite their fairly abject Group C performance.
Basically, Diego Simeone’s side have to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in their final group stage fixture and hope that Roma fall to the mighty Qarabag at the Stadio Olimpico.
Told you their chances were slim.
