The Allianz Arena played host to a surprisingly poor quality Champions League semi-final first-leg on Wednesday, with Real Madrid securing a 2-1 away win over their fellow Euro-heavyweights Bayern Munich.

The hosts opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark, with full-back Joshua Kimmich firing past Keylor Navas, who was all too easily beaten at his near post.

Despite Navas’ questionable keeping, it was still a very clever finish from the gifted Kimmich.

Bayern were the better side throughout the first period, but failed to convert a number of very good chances.

Then, just before the break, Real got one back, with Marcelo netting via a superb half-volley from the edge of the box.

The Brazilian defender would also do this later on…

Not bad!

In the second-half, the game continued to be littered with mistakes, with Cristiano Ronaldo, for once, unable to get on the scoresheet.

Then, on 57 minutes, a major ricket from Rafinha would hand Zinedine Zidane’s side the winning goal.

The Brazilian full-back saw a dreadful pass go straight to sub Marco Asensio who played a one-two with Lucas Vasquez before producing a lovely calm finish.

Bayern pushed for an equaliser but it wouldn’t come, with holders Madrid securing a precious first-leg away win.

The rather odd game would itself end in quite bizarre circumstances, with a number of pitch invaders wrestled to the floor by stewards.

Jupp Heynckes’ charges now need to score at least two goals at the Bernabeu next week if they are to book their place in the final.

As for Los Merengues, they remain on course for a thrid straight Champions League title, albeit with the small issue of Mo Salah and Liverpool likely to be standing in their way.
