Schalke 04 formally booked themselves a semi-final tie with Manchester United after rounding off their routing of Inter Milan with a 2-1 win (7-3 on aggregate) in Gelsenkirchen last night.

A coruscating finish from Benedikt Howedes sealed the second-leg victory for the German side, connecting with a delightfully lofted throughball from Raul after the veteran Spaniard had opened the scoring (the 71st Champions League goal of his career) for the Bundesliga side just before half-time.

For the record, Thiago Motta prodded home Inter’s goal.

    I am pretty sure Motta was not sent off this game

    Great for Schalke, Raul is a legend, but we will defeat them in the semi-final tie.
    Is Neuer still interested in switching Schalke for Bayern ?! Bayern are going to sink lower and lower, I’m quite sure about that and I will enjoy it. He should show a bit of loyalty to his boyhood club and stay there, or if he transfers he mustn’t go to any German club, especially not Bayern.
    Viva Manchester united !!!!!!

    @J: Quite right, don’t know what went on there!

    Oh what a fabulous time it is to be a Schalke fan! I’m certain ManUnited will destroy us on the 26th but for now it is pure joy!
    And I am glad to see Magath go…I know he was a great coach for many teams but I never liked him for us.
    I just wnat Mirko Slomka back… :P

    Thank you Chris for the Pies coverage! Much better to see us do well then to read how we’ve choked yet again. *L* Which we are just so good at!

    @RedFilip-
    It will be heart breaking if our little Manny leaves us!
    Gelesenkirchen is a town in very hard times and Manuel is something of an emblem of hope and pride.
    I suppose as long as he does not go to Dortmund we will be able to forgive him- after all he gave us all of his youth.

    If he felt he absolutely had to go somewhere I wouldn’t mind Arsenal. ;)

    I will always be grateful to Mirko Slomka for risking his reputation and giving him the number 1.
