John Terry To Be Prosecuted On Charges Of ‘Racially Aggravated’ Abuse – Faces £2,500 Fine

Word has just filtered through that John Terry is to be brought before the beak of the Crown Prosecution Service, after being charged with a ‘racially aggravated public order offence’ pertaining to the alleged abuse he alledgedly flung in the direction of Anton Ferdinand at Loftus Road back in October.

This comes after Terry was questioned under Police caution a week or so ago when ‘new evidence’ (apparently a second video) came to light. He’s now pencilled in to appear before West London Magistrates’ Court in early February.

Pretty amazing that ‘Teflon John’ Terry will be appearing in court over something that might have happened, rather than the several hundred disgusting things that he’s actually done over the years, but hey ho.

Said Terry himself:

“I am disappointed with the decision to charge me and hope to be given the chance to clear my name as quickly as possible. I have never aimed a racist remark at anyone and count people from all races and creeds among my closest friends.

“I will fight tooth and nail to prove my innocence. I have campaigned against racism and believe there is no place for it in society.”

For the record, Chelsea have released a statement saying they will be ‘fully supportive’ of their captain over the charges.

According to those in the know, the maximum punishment Terry is likely to receive, if found guilty, is a relatively paltry £2,500 fine (which is roughly equivalent to 40 minutes’ work for him).

But before anyone goes flying off the handle vis-a-vis the hugely disproportional punishment given to Luis Suarez, it’s worth mentioning that Terry hasn’t ‘gotten away without a ban’ YET. The FA are still to charge him and will definitely do so if he’s found guilty in a court of law. Criminal cases always takes precedence.

Any thoughts on the matter folks? Pies legal department would like to kindly urge you to keep them as un-libellous as is possible…

I am surprised the FA even went this far with their precious golden boy JT. And I am pretty convinced they were forced take action considering they just handed over a ridiculous ban to Suarez..

  2. nicko says:

If he is found guilty, then he should face as extreme a punishment as Suarez and be stripped of the England captaincy at the very least.

Although I dislike the cliché of footballers as “role models”, as captain of the nations most popular (sic) sporting team, he should know better and be a better example.

    • Chris says:

@Nicko: Agreed. He may well have ‘Teflon John-ed’ his way out of losing the armband on several occasions before thanks to a large slice of overwhelming reluctance from the FA, but if he’s convicted of hurling racist abuse then there can be no two ways about it.

    Top post nicko

  4. Phiwe says:

If Terry is found guilty, the FA have to give him worse punishment than the one Suarez received. Like Nicko said, keeping him as England’s captain would just be a joke

  5. Vimes says:

The FA just won a coconut – they can sweep this under the carpet until the trial is over, while praying for a “not guilty” verdict. The proud Englishman continues to play, a la Gerrard, under the presumption of innocence, while the foreigner gets his rightful comeuppance – cue much hypocrisy about “political correctness” and “over-sensitivity” from the same people currently demonising Suarez.

  6. Chimpo says:

Can someone please explain to a dumbo such as myself why terry has had criminal charges but suarez a ban. i realise terry may lead to a ban- but why werent they done the same way?

  7. Sultan says:

I remember Ferdinand doesn’t talk to Terry…Euro 2012 if they both play in defense how would that work ??

  8. Sultan says:

    I remember reading ***

  9. JohnCharles says:

    Quite Simply,

He abused someone; i.e the ref or ferdinand.

If he did insult the ref and people misunderstood it, he would have just come clean immediately and said “nah, sorry lads, i admit i called the ref a blind bastard”

the fact that he hasnt ONCE mentioned what he actually said, instead of whats being reported, shows he is actually guilty. plain and simple.

  10. WildScotsman6 says:

You just know everybody in the world is waiting for the results of this one….. if he doesn’t get anything at least close to what Suarez got there will be a riot!!

  11. Mr Sensible says:

But is an 8 game ban really extreme?

A very different situation to Suarez, I don’t really know enough of the situation other than I dislike Terry but that really is irrelevant.

    Who has actually complained?

  12. Redskywalker says:

Wow, I can’t comment as I don’t feel I anything to back up what I say, but if they’re charging him based on new footage as evidence then they must have found something. I hate Terry, but when I first saw the initial video I though there was nothing there.

I just hope people don’t innevitably start bitching and moaning at the FA, as the action they took on the Luis Suarez incident was brave and should be applauded.

“blah blah blah the punishment isn’t proportional” is obviously going to be the complaint of the month..
Remember, they’ve spent hours reviewing it.

  13. JJ says:

The FA will get Rooney’s lawyers on this right away.

  14. Tano says:

so what’s the big deal with racism

  15. Grant says:

As a Yank, I’m having trouble understanding a few things. Why are there criminal charges at all from this, and why is it that Luis Suarez was not similarly charged in criminal court? Could someone please shed some light on that, please?

    • Chris says:

@Grant: I believe it’s because the Police received complaints from QPR fans over Terry’s conduct, whereas the Suarez/Evra was able to be kept ‘in-house’. Simple as that.

  16. youreds says:

Whatever Terry’s punishment, it seems unlikely that Chelsea will not warm up with John Terry t-shirts on, blatantly showing two fingers to the campaign against racism.

    p.s. Liverpool are a disgrace.

  17. ArchbishopBettySnagcock says:

right to clear a couple of things up

@chimpo & grant: because it’s with the police the issue is not concluded yet, it’s going to court.

“charged” means he is going to court on suspicion of doing something, people are “charged” with things and then found innocent or guilty in court. That is why the FA aren’t doing anything yet, the case still isn’t proven.

and @JohnCharles: “the fact that he hasnt ONCE mentioned what he actually said, instead of whats being reported, shows he is actually guilty. plain and simple.”
    – do you think he really wants to come out and speak to a media that has attacked him continously for 2 years?? he believes that he is innocent and knows the only people who need to hear what he said are the law, would you want to go and explain yourself to someone you didn’t have to after them calling you a “disgrace of a human being (daily mail)” for 2 years??

whether or not he’s innocent remains to be seen but IMO he is not stupid enough to think he can get away with it when there are all those cameras watching his every move during the game.

    rant over.
