After a relatively innocuous-looking clash with Landon Donovan – who happens to be the star player for England’s first opponents in South Africa – it has been revealed, by Chelsea’s official website, that Ashley Cole has a fractured ankle which will keep him out of action for up to three months. Thanks, Landon, appreciate it.

And so it begins, the inevitable series of injuries to key England players that always seems to happen in a World Cup year. Whilst Cole should be fit in time to travel to South Africa, his match-fitness may be some way short of what Fabio Capello demands.

As Cole is by far the best left-back in England, and in the form of his life, this actually sucks. Can we put Wayne Rooney on ice until the summer?

Of course, the tabloid subplot now involves a certain Wayne Bridge, who may find himself playing alongside old chum John Terry soon enough. That will be a LOT of fun.
