France Soccer Champions League

Having come on as an 85th-minute substitute, Javier Pastore fleshed out PSG’s Champions League quarter-final first leg victory over Chelsea last night by helping himself to a spectacular third goal for the French side – bobbing and weaving his way in from the corner past several defenders before driving the ball past Petr Cech at his near post…

Jose Mourinho, as one might expect, was not overly impressed with the Argentine’s handiwork, describing the goal as a ‘ridiculous joke’ in his post-match interview, telling reporters: “The third was not a goal, it was a joke. Gary Cahill says ‘sloppy’. I say ‘ridiculous’.”

Call me crazy, but I think you are reading into this the way that most press want to – that Jose is taking the loss poorly and simply dismissing the skills of the opponent…because he’s Jose. He is mainly livid with his defense, and for good reason, for allowing Pastore to move so easily past 3-4 defenders who barely gave him a challenge. All respect to Pastore for the goal, but the defense should have been much more imposing on a player of that quality.
