Chelsea 1-3 Atletico Madrid (Agg: 1-3) – Champions League Semi Final 2nd Leg – 30th April 2014

After Real Madrid’s super counter-attacking display away from home on Tuesday, Atletico produced a similarly devastating performance at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, shooting down Chelsea’s hopes of another Champions League final appearance.

The Blues opened the scoring courtesy of Atletico old boy Fernando Torres on 36 minutes but that goal seemed to energise the visitors more than the hosts, and just before half-time Adrian struck the equaliser to make it 1-1 on aggregate.

On the hour-mark things went from bad to worse for the Blues, when Samuel Eto’o upended Diego Costa in the box, with the Brazilian-born Spanish striker converting the resulting spot-kick. Chelsea continued to toil in the second-half and eventually went 3-1 down when winger Arda Turan fired home after a super counter-attacking more and that was that.

While an all-Madrid final awaits Diego Simoene and co, I wonder if the Blues don’t win the league, will Jose Mourinho’s first season back in west London be seen as a failure?

  1. Matt says:

Yeah because being 2 games from a CL title and a PL title is such a failure.

Give me a fucking break. Thats better than 99% of supporters saw them doing this year.

  2. Jarren says:

Well, Matt, perhaps those in glass houses shouldn’t fling shit.

I’m sure Wenger is rather pleased this evening.

As for the CL final, thank fuck Chelsea & Bayern won’t be there.

Maybe now we’ll have something INTERESTING to watch.

  3. Gibbs says:

If Arsenal win the FA cup I wonder who the ‘specialist in failure’ would be then, José.

  4. Steve says:

It will be Mourinho’s first season as a manager without silverware, so from that standpoint, it’s a failure.

@matt are you referring to supporters in general or Chelsea fans?

I’m pretty sure most Chelsea fans were certain the return of the ‘Special One’ would bring them at least one prestigious trophy. This is Mourinho with probably the second best squad in the league. This could be his first potless season if I’m not wrong? I’m sorry but I’d say 99% of supporters expected a trophy.

  6. More In Ho says:

Thibaut Courtois is the real hero/villain of the piece here. Perhaps the “Special One” needs to start attending those Precognition 101 classes again. Mind you, that *is* pretty special, loaning your GK to the team that knocks you out at the penultimate round of the most prestigious prize in European football, and he having a massive “hand” in it as well.

ROFL Copters all over the place.

  7. Lukass says:

Guess the ‘happy one’ forgot to pull the handbrake on that bus of his. Good riddance. Zeru tituli, coglione!

  8. Hootie says:

It’s a victory for football that Chelsea aren’t in the final. Atletico will go at Real with everything and there won’t be any teams hoping for pens.
