Michy Batshuayi’s late, late goal secured a dramatic win for Chelsea away against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night in what may or may not come to be known as the ‘Diego Costa derby’.
The Blues impressed from the start against Diego Simeone’s Champions League heavyweights, with Eden Hazard hitting the post early on.
However, it was the hosts who would eventually open the scoring before the break, with Antoine Griezmann netting from the penalty spot after David Luiz had one of his funny turns and yanked the shirt of Lucas Hernandez from a corner.
Despite going behind, Antonio Conte’s side continued to shine after the break, and eventually got back on level terms on 59 minutes.
Alvaro Morata was the scorer, with the in-form striker getting the merest hint of eyebrows on a perfect Hazard centre.
Morata and Cesc Fabregas both failed to make the most of decent chances as the Premier League side pushed for a win.
However, the game looked to be heading for a draw – still a perfectly respectable result for the Blues – when substitute Michy Batshuayi scored from close-range with the very last kick of the game.
Indeed, the final whistle sounded while the Chelsea players celebrated en masse.
Poor old Diego Costa, back with Atletico and watching on in the stands, wasn’t too pleased with the result.

The win sees Chelsea become the first English side ever to win away at Atletico, who also fell to defeat in their first European game at their swanky new Wanda Metropolitano stadium.
The Blues now find themselves atop Group C, two points clear of second-placed Roma.
