Imagine if England lost Wayne Rooney to injury before the World Cup even started. That’s the reality facing Ghana fans, who must now come to the terms with the absence of talisman Michael Essien. The Chelsea midfielder has failed to recover in time from a knee injury and won’t be risked in South Africa.

A statement by the Ghanaian FA said: “An evaluation by a combined team of medical experts from the Ghana Football Association and Chelsea Football Club revealed that Essien will not make full recovery until the end of July.

“The Ghana Football Association wishes him full recovery and a quick return to football action.”

It’s a massive setback for Ghana’s World Cup ambitions, obviously, but very good news for their three group opponents – Germany, Australia and Serbia.
