The Swiss Federal Court has dismissed Adrian Mutu‘s appeal and upheld the Court Of Arbitration For Sport’s (CAS) decision that the Romanian forward is to pay Chelsea the €17.2 million designated by FIFA, in compensation for breaching his contract with the club when he tested positive for cocaine in 2004.

After the CAS upheld FIFA’s verdict last year, Mutu appealed to the Swiss Court in a bid to ensure that he wouldn’t have to pay a large portion of the potentially crippling fine.

CAS confirmed that Mutu planned to appeal their decision on Friday;

“Mutu requests the CAS to annul the FIFA decision and to establish that no compensation is in fact due.”

However, the Fiorentina striker’s appeal was deemed frivolous and duly thrown out by the Lausanne-based court, despite it usually taking an average of four months to reach a verdict on such matters.

The Associated Press claims that Mutu has been ordered to pay €17,173,990 with an added annual interest of five percent applied from 2008, plus €104,000 in legal fees.

The problems are mounting for the troubled player, who is currently serving a twelve-month ban for failing a double dope test in January.

    I am a Chelsea fan and I actually feel sorry for Mutu. That is a crazy sum and not many players have that kind of money. This will probably take him ages to pay back if EVER. There is no way he can pay this all at once or else he would be bankrupt. His career is almost over and I have no clue how he will find the money or a job that pays at the millions. What he did was terrible but maybe a lengthier sentence to his ban would be more appropriate. I doubt he earns money like Ronaldo or Beckham.
