The BBC Sport website’s Mourinho Leaves Chelsea section, which has relegated any other stories to Other Football News got me thinking: which other managers would command such domination of the website in the days following their departure? Fergie, probably. Arsene Wenger, maybe. But I doubt even that long-standing and successful duo would receive the same coverage as everyone’s favourite cocky Portuguese.
It would be interesting if the Beeb’s committment to being unbiased in politics, for instance, extended to football. Can you imagine a Sammy Lee Leaves Bolton section dominated the website as we all ponder the little man’s next move? Or Billy Davies Watch, anyone? So is Mourinho worthy of so much attention, Pies fans? Do we love him that much, or is just a quiet news week Mourinho aside?

The value of this news story isn’t just the size of Mourinho’s popularity at all though is it? It’s the shock of the sudden departure – I think when he didn’t leave in the summer everyone expected him here until xmas at least, and also there’s the whole Abrahamovic vs. Mourinho thing going on, compounded by his replacement being Grant. There’s a lot of news going on around this story, still a lot people want to know – that’s why it’s such a big deal – Ferguson wouldn’t get this much attention, say if he retired at the end of the season having notified everyone at xmas, because we’d all know the details, the whys the hows etc.

A handful of journalists managed to track down the fleeing Jose Mourinho to a harbourside eaterie in west London. When asked what the official Chelsea statement meant when it stated he left by “mutual consent”, Mourinho replied, “look it up in the dictionary”.
    Fair.
That is why…the strach should get his own page when he goes too
