So I watched Chelsea v Werder Bremen last night on ITV4, partly because I thought that PSV v Liverpool (on ITV1) would be 0-0, and partly to escape the sound of Clive Tyldesley’s voice.

Chelsea played well against a strong German team. The two Michaels, Ballack and Essien, were very good. Ashley Cole looked rusty but he needs time to gel with his team-mates. Frank Lampard should have set up Andriy Shevchenko for a third Chelsea goal, but the England midfielder chose to shoot from a tight angle, instead of pass to a wide-open Shevvers. At least Lampard let Ballack take the penalty.

With Barcelona waiting down the road, it was essential that Chelsea picked up a win at all costs. Jose Mourinho was happy with the performance (‘The result is fantastic,’ he said), but less happy that his players collected four of the softest yellow cards you’ll ever see. Mourinho said: ‘The reality is that if you look at Barcelona tonight they had
no yellow cards, Bayern Munich had no yellow card, Liverpool had no
yellow card, Valencia had no yellow cards, Roma had no yellow cards but
Chelsea have four. Do you think it is violence?’
