What Is Chelsea’s Best Five-Aside Team?

Here’s my perfect Chelsea five-aside team. In truth, the team almost picked itself:

PETR CECH – Even with the silly helmet, Petr has to be the first name on the team sheet. As manager of this team, I’d just tell him to save shots and roll the ball out to…

ASHLEY COLE – Great reader of the game, has more than enough pace to cover breakaways, fitter than a butcher’s dog. All in all, he’s just a damned fine player, whether there are ten or twenty-two players on the pitch. That said, I would love to watch Alex play five-aside, just to see at close range the almighty hoof on him.

MICHAEL ESSIEN – Pretty much the perfect modern footballer. Is there anything he can’t do? Poach a mean egg, perhaps.

FLORENT MALOUDA – Deceptively powerful, supremely skilful, very quick, and a brilliant finisher. Next…

DIDIER DROGBA – How can I leave the Drog out? I can’t. He wouldn’t allow it.

That is one powerful mini Chelsea. But no JT and no Lampsy.

Agree/disagree with Ollie’s selection? Let’s see what you’ve got…

Those would be my picks, Cole would be 6th pick, over Alex if injured, obviously.

Cry Baby and Fat Frank are not good enough to get into a five a side effort…simples.

With Essien in your team, you probably don’t even need a goalkeeper and defender: Malouda, Drogba, Anelka and Kalou/Lampard/Benayoun could just goal-hang and they’d probably win anyway.

You are basically suggesting a futsal team, with five players. From experience, you need amazing control and quick passing/reading of the game. I would agree with this list. Cole is by far the most quickest and technically gifted player in the Chelsea defense. I wasn’t sure if Essien’s raw power would suit a five aside game as he would commit a shitload of fouls. However, I realized he posses an amazing shot that would scare the shit out of his opponents. Drogba and Malouda are both by far the most skillful and quickest in attack.

i don’t particularly find malouda a skillful dribbler a la robben or david silva but he does possess speed and a wicked shot. i think on pure skill that gael kakuta kid is amazing. i would include him when it’s on a stamp sized pitch.

As far as futsal goes, Ashley Cole does lack something very important – (and I’m not even talking about ambidexterity) simply passing a bit with his right.
