Chelsea sauntered into the next stage of the Champions League with a predictably professional hit on Spartak. If Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka stay fit, they will take some stopping in the one competition that Roman Abramovich is desperate to win.

Drogba and Anelka were superb – remember when we thought they couldn’t play together? – but it was unsung hero Branislav Ivanovic who forced his way into the headlines with two goals, the first a powerful header (he’s good at those) and the second an instinctive striker’s finish on the swivel. That’s three goals in two games now for the Serbian shithouse – he’s been brilliant this season and last.

Spartak made a decent contest of it though and still lie second in the group, even after Marseille’s 7-0 demolition of sorry Zilina.
