Chelsea trundled past Bayer Leverkusen with minimum fuss to get their Champions League campaign off to a winning start at Stamford Bridge last night.
Both teams also saw a goal apiece ruled out over the course of the evening, Chelsea for offside and Leverkusen for a somewhat dubious tug as Simon Rofles nodded in a corner at the far post – not that it really mattered in the long run.
Goals from David Luiz (clipping Fernando Torres’ lay-off into the far corner from the edge of the area after a bombadiering run through the Leverkusen half) and Juan Mata (rolling Torres’ unselfish cross home in injury time) securing the victory for the AVB’s charges – with Luiz leaving the action in the 75th minute to a standing ovation on his first start of the season.
