Today saw  all of the squads for the forthcoming Euro 2012 extravaganza released. As well as confirming their 23-man outfit, England also released the squad numbers to the press and public.

If we were to see the numbers 1-11 as an indication of Roy Hodgson’s prefered first-choice side, then the former West Brom boss is planning to break with convention and actually play Frank Lampard alongside Steven Gerrard in central midfield, with no room for the more defensively-minded Scott Parker. Intriguing to say the least, particularly as it suggests a more traditional 4-4-2, maybe with Rooney (when available) playing behind Andy Carroll? As for what it says about England’s first two Rooney-less games, I’ll leave it up to you to consider that one!

It may well have nothing to do with Roy’s favourite 11 but it’s still worth a ponder –

                                                               1. Joe Hart

2. Glen Johnson                 5. Gary Cahill         6. John Terry                         3. Ashley Cole

                                     4. Steven Gerrard           8. Frank Lampard

7. Theo Walcott                                                                                                11. Ashley Young

                                      9. Andy Carroll          10. Wayne Rooney

12. Leighton Baines

13. Robert Green

14. Phil Jones

15. Joleon Lescott

16. James Milner

17. Scott Parker

18. Phil Jagielka

  1. Matt says:

I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again, Glen Johnson should not be on this team.

  2. Rob says:

I don’t think Lampard will start, he’s just keeping the number he usually plays in.
Get ready for Johnson to be blamed for every defensive mistake England make

  3. alan says:

Crouch got #9 for the World Cup and didn’t play despite the media making a fuss about the shirt numbers – I don’t expect anything different. Lampard will start games on the bench.

  4. Graham says:

Johnson and Walcott are the last two people you want on the same flank.

  5. aedan says:

the most un creative line up ever, i could shit out a better team sheet, why play with technically 4 forward oxlade instead of walcott any day. lescott instead of that racist twat, and why are two of the hardest working midfielders there aka scotty and milner and why carrol he’s tall thats is it.
    hart,johnson,cahill,lescott,cole,lampard scotty,milner gerard ,oxlade,ronney

  6. Joe says:

@Matt: Fair point but who else is there? Walker’s injured, Richards simply does not have the attitude or the concentration and Kelly (though I rate him higher than the toilet thief) isn’t first choice at his club.

  7. Dom says:

I like the look of that starting line up, although Parker would work better with Gerrard in midfield than Lampard. For the first games Defoe would be instead of Rooney.

  8. George says:

around the 67th minute of the champions league final, I noticed that Frank Lampard was on the pitch.
My vote would be for Parker. He does all the little things right.
Walcott? not on my team sheet.

  9. Yarbles says:

So, this is the starting XI for the last group game before you come home?

  10. JP says:

    FEED THE OX!!!!!

  11. Applesauce says:

    Johnson over Richards. Great choice.

I have France and Sweden advancing.

  12. adhikapp says:

    @Joe
Richards not having a great attitude? after the season he had and seeing what a bad season Johnson had, I’d actually be surprised if Richards wasn’t a bit angry of his exclusion.

For this squad though, I’d rather have Jagielka on the right. France and Ukraine to progress through the group.

  13. gilbert says:

and they give the number 13, rumored to be unlucky for some, to Robert Green.

  14. leo says:

NO PLACE FOR SCOTT PARKER? YOU GUYS ARE JOKES!!!!!!!

  15. Alex monteith says:

Hart, jones, Cahill, racist, cole, ox, Scotty, fatboy, young, Gerrard behind an if fit welbeck otherwise Carroll for the first two games, last group game and fingers crossed later stages drop Stevie back into midfield alongside Scotty and replace lampard with Rooney. I actually don’t think it’s a bad side, Kyle walker is a massive miss though, best right back in England with ease and I think it’s a damn shame Aaron Lennon isn’t there twice the player of theo Walcott and far more experienced then oxlaide chamberlain
