The Met have confirmed that six men are being held in police custody today after a 44-year old Wales fan died in hospital after being attacked outside Wembley following England’s 1-0 win last night.

The Police have also identified that the six men being held are all Wales supporters and that the victim, a Cardiff fan domestically, was assaulted due to his club loyalties – while, presumably, all seven men were sporting the red of the land of their fathers.

The fan was rushed to hospital with severe head injuries and died at around 9:00pm, after which it became clear that he had also suffered a heart attack outside the stadium.

Whether club or country, being murdered over something so insignificant as a footballing allegiance – the piffling, flaccid, pointlessly tribal, vapid stupidity of it all – just makes the death all the more nonsensical. Alas, such things are beyond the realms of comprehension.

As Pies reader R-Hops so succinctly put it in his comment left below the match article, no-one deserves to go out to a football match and never be able to come home. It’s as simple as that.

Of course, our sincere condolences go out to all those that now so needlessly warrant them.
