Zoltan Gera’s opener in the group-stage thriller between Hungary and Portugal has been officially voted as the best goal scored at Euro 2016.

The match eventually finished 3-3, though it was Gera’s 19th-minute daisy-mulching drive that sparked the whole kit and caboodle into life.

Hmmm. A fine effort, no doubt – but goal of the tournament? Xherdan Shaqiri scored an overhead kick from outside the 18-yard box for crying out loud!

Even so, Gera’s drive won with 32% of the vote conducted via the UEFA website, with well over 150,000 votes cast since the final brought the tournament to a close on Sunday evening.

Fans were asked to pick from a short-list of four contenders: Gera, Shaqiri, Cristiano Ronaldo (for his header against Wales) and Hal Robson-Kanu.

For what it’s worth, these little snippets of poll-related information are posted underneath the winning goal on the UEFA site, though we have no earthly clue what any of them actually mean…

We kind of understand the Peter Schmeichel bit, but the rest may as well be in hieroglyphics.

These goals of the tournament polls are so subjective, in terms of everyone having what constitutes their perfect goal in their mind, but that’s what makes this interesting.

For me it would have been between Shaqiri, Gera, Payet and Hamsik (the former two weren’t included within the top four), with Shaqiri coming out on top. For me it comes down to creativity, technique and how likely the keeper is to save the shot.

Robson-Kanu goal was quality but I wouldn’t have rated it as highly as some of the others, equally with Ronaldo’s header. My reasoning is; would I want to score an overhead kick outside the penalty area, where the ball is moving away from my body and guide it perfectly into the bottom corner, or would I want to score any of the other alternatives.

    Shaqiri for me.

Pure pish! It’s almost a like a joke of all the meaningless stats.

And who the hell voted for Gera’s (half decent) shot over Shaqiri’s glorious technique & pure power?!?

But yeah, at least they got the Schmeichel stat right.

Shaqiri best goal, for entertainment, HRK, those 3 defenders were heading out for a cocktail, cruyff was smiling
