“I’ve seen a few poor performances since I’ve been here but that will be up there with the worst of them. The performance was shocking.

“A team should fight from the first minute, not the 45th.”

Everton boss David Moyes, after last night’s defeat at the KC Stadium. He was right – his team was very poor in the first half, allowing Hull to jump to a 3-0 lead that they just about held on to.

Everton’s start to the season has been shocking indeed, but to be fair to Moyes, his squad has been decimated by injuries to more than ten first-team players, including long-term ones to the likes of Mikel Arteta (how Everton have missed his invention), Phil Neville and Phil Jagielka.

Hull, meanwhile, have been rejuvenated – almost single-handedly, it seems – by the return of Jimmy Bullard. The lively midfielder did not even play last night (he was rested by Phil Brown), but his mere presence has boosted morale and confidence throughout the club, as has the reappointment of chairman Adam Pearson.

Hull and Everton both have 15 points now – you wouldn’t have predicted that a few weeks back.
