Returning to a theme we pursued last year, Pies looks at each Prem team and asks you to think of them in terms of Liverpool, i.e. a two-man team (Torres and Gerrard, natch).

So far we’ve done ArsenalAston VillaBirmingham CityBlackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers and Chelsea.

Today we offer up a very, VERY tricky one: Everton.

The problem with Everton is the sheer depth of their squad. David Moyes doesn’t do prima donnas, he builds teams – that’s why I think it will be very hard to narrow their squad down to two essential players. But here goes…

I’d like you to clear your mind… think of Moyesey’s squad as a two-man team… hold that thought…

I see the two Tims, Cahill and Howard, who are both operating at their peak and who I think are both world-class. But on another day, I could just as easily see Phil Jagielka and Mikel Arteta, or Jack Rodwell and Marouane Fellaini, or Steven Pienaar and Johnny Heitinga. That’s a testament to the quality of squad that Moyes has assembled.

Which two players do you see?

Arteta and Pienaar – can just about survive withone but lose both and we’re nowhere near as good.

Notice the change in fortunes once Pienaar returned from injury?

    Cahill and Felaini

    Osman and Pienaar

You can come up with quite a few “key” players in Evertons squad. But if you think in terms of which ones will be most missed…i.e. which ones are nearest to “irreplaceable”. Then it would have to be Pienaar (nobody else, not even Arteta offers the creativity he does) and Howard (for obvious reasons).

Neville & Saha. As hard as it is to believe, without Neville we do not have the focus and organisation that we do with him, that is why Moyes will play him in 3 or 4 positions to make sure he is in the team when arguably there are better players available. Saha is a true goalscorer, something we have missed for a few years now.

  8. Bogdan says:

    Fellaini and Howard

  9. Shaun says:

Last year would have easily been Arteta and Jagielka before they both got injured. This year its been Pienaar and Fellani!

  10. Chris says:

Baines and Pienaar, fantastic and very creative left side.

Last year I would say 2 of Arteta, Jagielka and Yakubu. But then all 3 got injured and we still played great. This season I’d maybe say Cahill, Pienaar, Saha, Fellaini. But we beat Chelsea with Pienaar and Fellaini sidelined. We beat Utd with Cahill and Fellaini sidelined. Leighton Baines and Captain Neville could also come into the conversation… I don’t really think you can pick just two.

Even when we have no strikers Moyes moves Cahill and Fellaini up from and we’re just as successful.

Donovan and Donovan! Look at their results with him.

Peanuts and the Spanish wizard(at his best), a match for any team in Europe.
Tim & Fellini seem to be getting near perfect together, shame injury hit us AGAIN when it did.
Saha(when he’s on fire) & Donavan firing in the crosses.
I love them all, howard, Bainsey, Ozzy, even our captain, he’s the most prfessional, top man, footballer I’ve seen for years.
