Ban him. Lock him up (preferably in an iron mask) and throw away the key. Steven Pienaar should never see the light of day again for this…

Joking of course. In all seriousness, has there ever been a softer red card in the Premier League? We’re certainly struggling to recall one.

It was Pienaar’s second bookable offence in the space of a few minutes, though to call it a yellow-worthy offence is still over-cooking by a bloomin’ mile – Bosingwa just clipped his swinging boot against Pienaar’s outstretched leg. It was an accident at best.

Seems like plain old, card-less fouls are quickly becoming a thing of the past in the top flight. We can’t have a stoppage in play without some sort of accompanying drama to go with it.

We don’t like to criticise referees necessarily here on Pies – it’s a ridiculously tough job and they’re ridiculously good at it the majority of the time – but Jon Moss had a bit of a shocker at Loftus Road yesterday, lousing up a few key calls.

    Does he even touch him?

  2. Vimes says:

Hmm – easy to criticise the ref, but Pienaar could easily have been given a second yellow for his previous challenge. Moss called Phil Neville over and seemed to make it pretty clear that the next foul would be his last – perhaps you should be questioning David Moyes’ judgement in not subbing him, before the inevitable happened?

  3. Onlooker says:

@Vimes – that opinion depends wholly on accepting this incident as a foul, which it wasn’t.

  4. C says:

What was the offence? Breathing to hard on his neck while chasing?

  5. Anonymous says:

hopefully by the time his ban’s up he’ll have his hair back

  6. porcelain sandwich says:

I can see where the ref is coming from if he was standing behind. Pienaar does seem to make a deliberate movement to trip him over, but then doesn’t. It would have been hard to tell the difference.

  7. Eckpfosten says:

Klose would have told the ref the truth.

  8. Nick says:

That’s a lifetime ban. What an awful tackle, I hope he never plays football again.

  9. Zam says:

Really, he should have seen red for the foul before, and it wasn’t much later than that, if that hadn’t happened, this would have been no carded for sure. As for the foul before, Neville should have been off before that and not there to plead Pienaar’s case. There was also that peno non call that QPR should have got. Crazy, crazy game. Surprising to say it, but Everton were very, very lucky.

As an Everton fan, even I agree Pienaar’s foul just a couple minutes earlier could have resulted in a second yellow card. This call, however, was a bit of joke. I can’t help thinking the referee had second thoughts about not sending Pienaar off earlier and felt entitled to correct his prior decision when he had any excuse.

As a referee I must agree the referee did not have a good game. For this incident, he was a few yards to the left of Pienaar and, if he saw the incident at all, should have been able to see it was not a foul at all, much less cause for a yellow card.

  11. Mr Sensible says:

The ref evened things up a few minutes later though when he didn’t give QPR a clear penalty.

I’m still confused as to why a multi billion pound industry such as the Premier League still use fat old unfit men to be in charge of a high tempo sport of highly athletic sportmen. The man was sweating and struggling from the first minute, pathetic.

  12. Smith says:

this would be funny but seems he will now miss the derby and we’ve got injuries to other important players it’s just shocking

  13. Jarren says:

    Totally ridiculous.

I felt for the guy watching this on MOTD.
