Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Everton v Crystal Palace - Goodison Park

Having supported the club from afar for 30 years, Malaysian Everton fan Ric Wee (stop sniggering at the back!) decided to book himself tickets for last night’s game against Crystal Palace at Goodison in order to fulfil a lifelong dream of his – to watch his beloved Toffees playing ‘live’.

Sadly, however, the good old English weather intervened and, due to building damage near the ground, the game was called off at the 11th hour – thus totally scuppering Ric’s plans despite him making the 6,600-mile journey from Kuala Lumpur to Merseyside.

This is about the point that things take a turn for the awesome, as Everton managed to track down Ric before he left the premises and gave the Malayasian superfan his own personal tour of the stadium as a show of gratitude for his tireless support – even taking in face-to-face meetings with the likes of Leighton Baines and manager Roberto Martinez…

You’ve got to give it to Everton; they just know how to do the whole ‘club/fan relations’ thing right, don’t they?

6,500 miles is nothing compared with the total of 1,000,000 miles traveled by the 2,000 Palace fans who were at the ground when the decision was made to cancel the game 30 minutes before kick-off.

Even Michael Fish would have been able to give more notice that the game was to be cancelled than Everton FC.

Class act from the club! Refreshing to see a club make a fans day. Fair play this is PR gold but at the same time they could of just ignored the tweets

  3. Dave says:

Classy act from a classy club..@Andrew feel your pain at travelling but safety is paramount here. Wouldn’t fancy a roof slate clocking me on the head.

  4. Doug says:

This is a class act from a club of true class. I doubt many other clubs would do the same.

  5. Son of St Domingo says:

Andrew, really sorry that you all had a wasted journey but it was a police decision due to slates flying off the roof of the Winslow pub next to the ground which only occured close to kick off time.
Having had one of our fans killed by flying debris at Leicester in similar conditions 10 years ago I think the police did the right thing.

@andrew. I’m no mathematician but based on your math the average Palace fan traveled 5,000 miles for the game? Did they come from behind the Soviet Curtain to get there?

  7. AK says:

@other dave. Sorry to put some egg on your face, but 1,000,000 divided by 2,000 is 500 not 5,000 as you stated. You were right, though, that you are no mathematician!
