Everton right-back and all round nice guy Seamus Coleman has donated £5,000 to help a young Toffees fan realise his dream of watching a match at Goodison Park next season.

Daire Flanagan was born with a rare genetic disorder called Apert Syndrome and as such wasn’t expected to live longer than 48 hours.

Six years on down the line, Daire is still going strong and has his heart set on making the trip from his home in Belfast to watch his beloved Everton in action.

His family set up a funding campaign to raise the £1,000 they need to make the journey, as Daire can only travel safely via Air Ambulance.

After catching wind of the fund-raising drive, Everton first offered to lay on a full VIP package for Daire before Coleman swept in and added a hefty £5,000 of his own money to the pot out of the sheer goodness of his heart…

Coleman himself told the Everton website:

I read Daire’s story online and would love to help get him his trip to Goodison next season.

I hope that [my donation] can help get Daire and his family a safe trip to Liverpool.

Looking forward to seeing you at a game next season.

Smashing stuff from all involved.

Huge amount of respect for this club. They definitely seem to engender a spirit of kindness and respect with their players towards those less advantaged and within their community. And while the papers are beholden to what goes on on the pitch with football, it’s really these kind of initiatives that need more press. So thanks for this, Pies.

    Cracking club, well done Everton.

    From a Rovers supporter.

Lots of EFC players do massive amounts of good work for the wider community. It’s why they are known as the People’s Club. Unfortunately the middle aged men who run the press were kids when they decided to pick LFC as their team, hence why you will never hear much about the good work EFC players do. In fact, EFC’s community efforts go ignored 90% of the year whilst the overpaid flops at “the biggest club in the world” get all the headlines for giving out some presents to a bunch of vegetables every xmas. (you don’t believe me, go and do a little research by means of the local press).

Liverpool supporter here, and I couldn’t agree more with both of you. Pies has done an excellent job bringing a lot of these stories to light, and the mainstream outlets don’t cover these types of stories enough.

For all the pampered clowns buying flashy cars, posting pictures of their new haircuts every week, wasting money and whining, there are some great professional out there, plenty of whom pull on an Everton shirt each weekend.

Steven Naismith alone is more genuinely charitable than most PL clubs, and I honestly think the PL needs a Sportsman/Humanitarian of the Year award for this type of thing. The players who would win it would care one bit about the accolade, they’re already doign stuff like this for the right reasons, but it would set a great example for everyone else.

Well done Seamus Coleman. A class act off the pitch, and still the Prem’s best bargain on it!
