Despite having spent most of the season mired in the drop-zone, Sunderland booked their place in next season’s Premier League after a convincing 3-0 win against Everton at the Stadium of Light. Understandably, the fans, players and staff were rather pleased.

The goals all came courtesy of defenders, with Patrick van Aanholt opening the scoring on 38 minutes before Lamina Traore bagged a brace against a tepid Everton side. To add to the joy of the occasion for the home fans, the win also condemned rivals Newcastle, as well as Norwich, to the Championship…

While Big Sam has done it again, Everton boss Roberto Martinez will be fearing for his job after an underwhelming campaign.

As a Newcastle fan, I can honestly say that that Sunderland deserved to stay up based on the quality of their performances and we deserved to go down. Fair play to them.

    Championship, here we come…

Congratulations also to Lamina Traore for his brace – great to see him in the news as I thought he’d retired years ago! That signimg definitely slipped under the radar.

As a neutral, Sunderland deserve to stay up, especially when compared to calamitous Newcastle, but, ugh. More Big Sam and middling defensive sweat…
