Everton’s dismal season hit a new low on Thursday night, with the Toffees dumped out of the Europa League after a 3-0 defeat away to Lyon.

Caretaker manager David Unsworth started with Gylfi Sigurdsson in an unfamiliar striking role, and unsurprisingly the out-of-form playmaker struggled to make an impact.

Everton were dealt a blow in the first-half when  full-back Cuco Martina was stretchered off in a neck brace. before being taken to hospital for observation.

The opening goal of the game came on 68 minutes, with former Chelsea attacker Betrand Traore running through the Toffees’ backline before firing home.

Substitute Houssem Aouar then doubled Lyon’s advantage, firing past Jordan Pickford after the Everton ‘keeper had already saved from Mariano Diaz.

Schneiderlin and Everton’s night went from bad to worse on 80 minutes, with the French midfielder sent off after a second yellow.

The hosts would score once more before the final whistle, when ex-Manchester United winger Memphis Depay headed in from close-range.

The defeat, coupled with Atalanta’s 1-1 draw with Apollon Limassol means that Everton now cannot make it to the knockout stages, as their season continues to disappoint.

As for Unsworth, with three defeats out of three since Ronald Koeman left Goodison Park, he looks to have failed his audition for the Everton hot-seat.
