On a pivotal day in the race for Premier League survival which saw Stoke relegated, Southampton’s vital clash with Everton ended in painful drama for the struggling Saints.

A second-half goal from the impressive Nathan Redmond out the visitors a goal up at Goodison.

Mark Hughes’ side looked to be heading for a precious win which would have moved them into 16th spot, two points clear of the drop-zone.

The late sending off of Maya Yoshida didn’t help Saints’ cause.

However, they looked to have weathered a late storm, with Alex McCarthy making a fine save to thwart Leighton Baines.

But then, at the death, poor play from Ryan Bertrand eventually saw Tom Davies muster a shot at goal, with a cruel deflection off Wesley Hoedt sending the ball past McCarthy and into the back of the net.

Painful stuff for Southampton!

Saints still managed to climb out of the relegation zone, albeit only by goal difference, with Tuesday’s game with Swansea, who are 18th with the same number of points, an utterly momentous clash.
