Due to the heavy rain that enveloped Dean Court at the weeked, around 200 travelling Burton Albion fans received the news that their FA Cup third round tie at Bournemouth had been postponed less than an hour before kick-off, thus rendering their 300-mile round trip utterly pointless.

Via an online fundraising drive over on Gofundme.com, Bournemouth’s fans decided to do their Burton counterparts a favour and try to raise £800 to help pay for the 200 supporters to attend the re-arranged fixture, though that target has been eclipsed, with the Cherries fans managing to cobble together a whisper under £3,000 (£2,930 if we’re being specific) to add to the away side’s travel coffers.

Bournemouth fans were happy to assist Burton supporters as the Brewers were incredibly gracious in letting their opponents celebrate their promotion from League Two at Pirelli Stadium back in 2010, with the Cherries allowed to rejoice on the Burton pitch en masse after the game.

Fundraising organiser and Bournemouth fan David Whitehead told BBC Radio Solent:

“It shows there is another side to football. They were so hospitable that day that there’s been a special feeling between the clubs ever since.”

And while for that kind of money, the Burton fans could probably travel to the south coast in luxury chartered private jets, the plan is to cap the fund at the price of hiring three coaches and to let Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe nominate a charity to receive the rest of the leftover change.

All good stuff, we’re sure you’ll agree.
