ESPN Quiz Soccer Expert Alexi Lalas, Ask How Lionel Messi Will Fare At Euro 2012 (Audio)

By Chris Wright

Messi: Definitely not going to the Euros this time round

Oh silly ESPN, you never fail to astound. Over on their flagship ‘Mike & Mike’ show a few days ago, ESPN’s in-house soccer analyst Alexi Lalas was invited on to run the rule over Euro 2012 – only to be asked just how he thought Lionel Messi was set to fair at the European Championships this summer…

Listen on the ESPN player (skip to 1:00 mark).

To be fair, Lalas tip-toes round the question admirably despite being faced with dangerously large quantities of weapons-grade dumbass.

How come there aren’t any soccer specialists on ESPN ?

Even a 5 year old European would know about that, seriously.

To be fair Mike and Mike are the biggest cunts in US sports media. Not sure what to compare to across the pond, but their show is dumbed down for mouthbreathers who only comprehend conservative, non-threatening humor.

Fox Soccer though gives us Warren Barton, Brian McBride, Eric Wynalda, and Keith Costigan. I’ll be the first to admit that when Chris Sullivan calls Serie A games it’s just awful. With the exception of Ray Hudson and American Phil Schoen calling La Liga games I don’t think Americans have any business in the booth.

ESPN Soccer has Ian Darke and Mcmanaman and I really enjoy their broadcasts. For big matches Ian Darke always does a nice little intro with fans and things which is great for us ‘muricans.

I should apply for the job. I have Championship Manager 5, FM 2006 and 2011 experience, not to mention I’m European and not a complete tosser like Lalas.

  4. Murray says:

@a–Alexi Lalas is ESPN’s chief soccer specialist.

  5. Miguel - NYC says:

ESPN is clueless and Mike and Mike even more so.
What does it take to realize that Argentina does not play in the EUROcup?
Lalas actually gives some sound commentary and his insight in this particular interview was on point. Saying that England has no business at this tournament is not going to shock anyone. Well, anyone who actually knows about the game.
Btw, most people in the US do not realize the difference between club football and tournaments between countries. US teams play other US teams (and some canadian) and call themselves “WORLD” champions.

I think the best commentary team on US tv should somehow put Tommy Smith and Ray Hudson in the commentary booth together. That would be entertainment… But whatever happens, please never allow Max Bretos anywhere near a microphone or you will get this:

Jozzzzy Altidore, go celebrate with your people!!! Clint Dempseyyyyy, WOW WAH WEEEE WAHHHHHH

  8. jon says:

oh come on, bretos is comedy gold! if your team is up, his ridiculous calls just add to the celebration of the goal. WAH WAH WEE WAH? Perfect! if your team is down, at least you can laugh at a guy who may be having a seizure on the air.

  9. Sebastian says:

Max Bretos & Christopher Sullivan are the worst, most annoying commentators I have ever heard. Honorable mention for Sid Lowe & Christian Miles who I both find irritating as well. However, I only heard Lowe once and I think someone told him he should stick to writing and not talking.

  10. Bear says:

Bretos’ bits sure beat the scoregasms coming from Gary Neville.

  11. Anonymous says:

Hey Titus, you are correct that is the worst commentary ever, but is is not Max Bretos.

  12. KKK says:

To be fair, Messi is considered more Spanish than Argentinian by most of the world.
